For those who are studying in Australia

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think the general consensus is that Australia is great, but if you can get into a US med school, then you're probably better off career-wise. There are plenty of pros and cons to Australia, but that depends mostly on you. I love Sydney, but that's probably just because I love everything.

Hahaha, you're awesome shan

I haven't gotten to Aus yet (a few more weeks now), but almost everyone I've spoken to has had a +ve experience. If you can do the US, though, you should aim for that.

I'm a little past studying in Austraila, but so far I've enjoyed the working life here post grad. There are a lot of pros to working here after graduation, which can be found by doing a forum search and looking at old posts.

I love Sydney, but it is getting harder to find a job here. It is the same for post graduates. GAMSAT is also not easy.

Hi, I have a question regarding studying medical school in australia.
Im a Canadian citizen I finished a B.Engineering and a Master of Engineering at McGill. I am sick of Canadian weather and would like a change and am considering applying to Australia for medical school for 2011 Jan. I was wondering is a medical degree from Australia equivalent to a medical degree from Canada and the US?
I think eventually I would like to practice in the US or somewhere warmer in Canada, but I am worried that my degree wont be recognized?
Does anyone know if an MD from Australia is equivalent to an MD in North America?

Hi Sophi,

This likely didn't get any bites because your questions have been asked a lot here -- do some searches in the forums and you'll see that the MBBS here (with variants to its name depending on school) is equivalent to the MD in N. America and is recognized as such, while an MD here is a research doctorate you can work towards after you have an MBBS and is thus more advanced than the N. American MD. Much more, along with related matters like actually being able to register to work back in N. America, can be found in the relevant threads.
