You can submit to more than 1? When do you have to give your final decision, then?

no, technically you are not supposed to put a deposit down at more than one school, but many people do because they can't decide by january 15 and they apparently have the luxury of blowing thousands of dollars.

however, schools do not have any way of knowing if you do this, so if you are pathetically indecisive, and rich, then you can do it.

jan 15 is still over 4 weeks away and hopefully that will be enough time to decide!! go with gut feelings you had when you visited the schools- they count the most.

some schools only give you until 12/31, and it's a really tough decision... i would totally understand putting down a deposit at multiple schools, especially if they are <$1000 and/or refundable. i agree that it's much better to make one's decision in the time alloted, but sometimes that's really difficult...

true. pathetically indecisive was a bit harsh. sorry. anyway, do you know which schools have refundable deposits? that seems like it almost encourages people to do the multiple deposit thing.

just do what I did last year....I sent in my deposit to NYU just to be sure, but I knew I wouldnt go there if I got in ANYWHERE else, so I sent them a cheque that would bounce.

I knew that NYU wouldnt cash the cheque right away and it would buy me more time. When the office receives the cheque, they put me into the system as cheque paid and put me on the class list without cashing it, so Im all set.

Than when they finally get off their arse to cash the cheque and it bounces, they would inform me. Going back and forth with emails buy you PLENTY OF TIME. So if I didnt have another acceptance by then, I would play stupid and pretend I was having problems with my bank to try and buy as much more time as I could...but the key thing would be that I was still in their system as accepted. THats key! Then you just play stupid as far as it takes you. Since you are one of many they are dealing with, you would be suprised of much you could delay things!

It worked beautifully for me, cause I got accepted to Temple a month after, and saved the $500 on the NYU deposit and said adios to NYU.

Call me unethical, but I used that $500 and went to Costa Rica for the summer :hardy:

Why don't you try asking the school for more time instead of sending in money that you know you are going to lose?

Instead of sending in the deposit money right away... continue your research of all the schools you got into... 4 weeks is enough time... invest in a few trips to the area... and explore... thats the only way to know if a school is the right fit for you... 4 years of dental education is gonna be tough as it is... but if the environment is not right... its gonna be tougher. Hear say about a school is not enough... the ball is in your hands... make the right decision.

That's awesome! 🙂 I need to remember this for next year at this time.

sometimes it is inevitable that you will have to send multiple deposits, and not just because you're indecisive. for example if you are accepted to a few schools right away and they give you until jan. 15, yet your first choice school has not made a decision on you yet, you would be forced to put a deposit at your second choice just in case your first choice ends up rejecting you. but if your first choice doesn't decide on you until their first round of deposits jan. 15 and then accepts you, then you will have put in two deposits, one at the school you were accepted right away at and one at the one you end up going to. does this make sense?

totally. i've in a somewhat analagous situation myself, which is why i was so pleasantly surprised to see that SB's deposit is 1. only $350, and 2. refundable until March; really nice of them to my mind, though it might sometimes encourage multiple deposits. i'm not sure about this last point - people who know for sure would send to only one school; it's only for those who for some reason cannot make a decision in the time allote who would put down multiple deposits, and they would probably put down multiple deposits in any case. but being as there are many who fall into this latter category, i think it's great that some schools will refund it.

Please people don't follow this example. If you like your credit, you won't be foolish to do this. Besides, $1000 is nothing in the long run. How much is that compared to the loan you're about to take? What 1%? Ya, it's nothing

just make sure to send them an additional, good check for $30, to cover the surcharge the bank bills them for trying to cash a bounced check. i just don't think it's ethical to make them pay for your dilemna.

Dr.badvibes et-all:

Good job using the system to your advatange 🙂

BUT BEFORE EVEN THINKING ABOUT DOING THIS BEWARE OF CHECK 21.

This recent law change means that banks no longer have to physically tansport checks and can make legally binding digial copies to send back to your bank.

This means that any check can be CASHED AS SOON AS IT ARRIVES, in some instances within hours.

For more info the Fed. Res. has FAQ here: http://www.federalreserve.gov/paymentsystems/truncation/faqs2.htm

Good post - and banks are really starting to implement this. I don't know if it is a matter of the school's bank holding the check, or the secretary physically holding the check until he/she decides to walk to the bank, in the case of Dr.BadVibes.

I have been told by numerous (now dental students) from my school that I should expect to blow some money on deposits if I don't hear from my top pick. Thus, it's something that I have just accepted as a possible reality - though one that I hope will not come to pass.

can i get an acceptance letter??

i don't knwo why i even bother visiting this site anymore i won't find out any more information till late january at the earliest. i guess i am in the same boat as you guys were prior to december 1st.

This does nothing to your credit..if you get accepted to another school before they try and cash it, just call the bank and make a stop payment. But if its after, all you gotta do is play dumb to both the bank and the school. its only 1-2 cheques and you can make up some stories. Its not like you are doing this all the time....its only a one time thing. Credit will be unaffected.

Sure its nothing in the long run of dental school, but after paying so much money on going to various interviews, I didnt want to blow another $500, so I resorted to this and it worked out BRILLIANTLY! By the way, Costa Rica was a beautiful, well deserved "before dental school starts" trip for me 😀

Im sure NYU could easily afford the $30 charge...I didnt lose any sleep over it!

OH yah...and I forgot to mention....even after the cheque bounced, NYU was still sending me stuff thinking that I was on their list of matriculants even though they didnt physically have money from me....it was not until the summer where they actually caught on and asked me if I was still going to NYU, so they were still giving me the option!!!!....so I was able to delay my NYU acceptance about 6 months and Im positive it could have worked for other large private schools as well...

Trust me....acting stupid has gotten me a lot in life...not only this, but through travelling it has worked wonders! How many times was I able to scam trains in Europe by acting like a stupid innocent, clueless backpacker....just go on the train and hope that the conductor doesnt come by to check tickets (in Europe its random).....I was able to save hundreds of dollars by doing this.....but if they do, just do this:

Conductor: Ticket please
Me: How much is it?
Conductor: Why didnt you buy the ticket at the station
Me: Oh, I didnt know, cause in Canada, we buy our train tickets from the conductor.
Conductor: Oh, ok, so that is gonna be XX dollars
Me: Ok, here is my Visa
Conductor: sorry sir, but we dont accept Visa
Me: Oh...because I dont have any cash on me....do you have an ATM on this train
Conductor: No.....its ok, just remember to bring cash on the next train
Me: No problem sir

Or...

You can try the ole trying to find your ticket through your backpack and annoying the train conductor...the train conductor slowly moves on to the next passengers and by the time he goes to the end of the car and I still am looking for the ticket, he just goes on the next car and forgets about me...that worked for me in Switzerland and England

But sometimes it backfires...in Spain, I pretended to not understand spanish and acted completely stupid cause I was trying to scam a free ride...so when the train arrived at my station, the conductor turned me over to the security at the station...I explained to him that I was extremely sorry that I forgot to buy my ticket at the station, cause I ran out of Euros.....gave him the puppy dog face and he let me go

Damn, I should write a book of scams! 😀

and if your a chick, you can get away with murder if you really wanted to!

Yah but in Asia, I dont mind spending the 50 cents the train ride would cost (Japan excluded), whereas in Europe its $50!

When I went to Latin America, I never scammed cause everything was so damn cheap, it wasnt worth it

I'm just glad that I'll likely never meet you, then; in my book stealing is stealing, and I don't really understand, or like dealing with, people with such "flexible" morals. But hey, if it works for you (i.e., your conscience gives you no problems), who am I to argue differently? I'd just rather not deal with you, lest I be catagorized a "rich person."

What I mean by rich is someone that is incredibly rich like Bill Gates or huge corporations....If I ripped off Bill Gates, NYU or Office Depot, I wouldnt care nor lose sleep over it. WHy not? They rip us off all the time, but in a "legal" way......But then again, this is just me.

People who act like you worry me about how the world is working... Get this straight, it is illegal to stop payment on a check after you write it. If you would like to see how the full extent of the law plays out, be my guest. Play dumb all you want, but it's a numbers game you will eventually lose. Currently, most credit card companies are switching towards increasing your rates if you so much as miss a payment or write a bad check. It doesn't matter if you've had great credit for years. It's a way for CC's to bring in extra revenue. Along with Check 21, it's a great plan for them.

In the end it's a matter of personal ethics as to what someone would consider bad. Ripping off rich people seems fine now, but switch positions and suddenly it's ALL WRONG. You'd be amazed at how easy it is to "skim" a little extra off a patient, and be totally fine with it ethically, you know, a couple dollars here and there, no problem.

PS. Bill Gates is a good guy, who will eventually give all his money away to charities (already over 20 billion donated).
