Okay so I emailed a professor about possibly doing research this summer and into MS2, and he emailed back to come to his clinic "so we can talk".

What does this mean? What should I tell her in the meeting? I am a bit frightened about what to do (similar to how my first interview for med school was).

ADVICE PLEASE!!

He/she (you used both pronouns!) probably just wants to discuss your plans, ideas, etc.

What are you interested in? What are your future plans? What kind of research are you interested in? (Clinical? Basic science? Hands-on vs. chart review?) What do you hope to accomplish? What field of research are you interested in? What field is this professor in?

oops, I was writing like normal but then I changed the pronoun to hide my story in case said-person happended to read this post...

Hence the problem. I am doing research because I want to match into a good ortho program and research will help me do that. However I dont think that this is a good thing to tell the professor, or is it? I am interested in ortho but havent done research so I am not sure what kind of research to do? woah ith me!

Ah, fair enough. Anonymity is under-rated!

Think about answers to my other questions. What's your professor teach? Anything related to Ortho? What interests you about Ortho? What interests you about research? Ideally, what would you like to do? What are you goals?

Etc.

He/She is an ortho surgeon which is why I hope to do research with him/her, I am thinking of it too.

CAN anyone share what they told the professor at their said meeting?

Tell him/her why you are interested in ortho. Give good reasons. Perhaps read up on that person's research beforehand to get an idea what kind of things they do, and then you can talk about why you are interested in working on those types of projects.

Excellent advice, I will do some stalking!!

Quoting this for truth. I had a similar interview with a neurologist a few weeks ago; they realize that you know nothing about medicine (let's be honest with ourselves) but you should definitely know what you want in the near future and be well-informed about why you are talking with this professor in particular, not that you picked him/her out of a hat.

NIce some stroke research I presume.

So what did you say to the guy?....My answer would be: I just want to get into a great ortho residency.... and I am not sure that is good enough for him/her to waste his/her time on me?

And what if we, "not necessisarily" picked him/her out of a hat, but off a long list randomly?

You shouldn't pick randomly. If you are going to do research do it in something that interests you. You won't get anything useful accomplished if the research bores you. Thus, you have to do your homework before picking a research mentor.

Talk about why you want to ortho. If you don't have a good reason, then just talk about why you are interested in sports medicine, etc.

I think you're overthinking the situation. It's fairly obvious why you want to do the research; just read that particular surgeon's CV and start schmoozing. Don't beat around the bush, simply say: "I'm seriously pursuing an orthopaedics residency and would like research experience in the field, particularly with your interest in X (bone regeneration, 3D modeling, you name it) because I find it engaging and innovative."

What could possibly be a better reason for an MS1 on summer break to be holding this meeting?
