For those who learn FA best with flash cards / ANKI

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know of a free anki supported ipad app? Their official one is 25 bucks and frankly I'm just curious if there is something free out there first. Thanks.

GREAT ! Do they contain FA 2012 errors ?! Is it only FA or it has other info like goljan and pathoma?

Thanks !!

As far as I can see, it includes all corrections from the final errata. It is mostly FA, along with tons of new mnemonics, and some extra stuff from I don't know where - like heart sounds, etc.

And, Brain Bucket, you're welcome. But, I have to ask, did you really register an account just to post that?

He's probably been a forum lurker for a long time... just like me haha I guess the guy wanted to show his gratitude by creating an account. I will also thank you for finding this, good sir 😛

Pretty much. I also have the Neuroanatomy and Biochem shelves coming up and so was considering asking for advice on how to study for them. I'm afraid of the answers.

And, yeah, I've lurked here since I started undergrad.

This is incredibly well written and useful. Thank you for doing this, assuming you constructed the deck, or whether not you did or didn't, posting it.

also, some decks nicknaylor and I made, for those who aren't going to buy the anki app.

all drugs mentioned in FA, will update with UW mentions when I get to it:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ApZvgjtaB02ddFBQdzlJb2ttRVJESXRKbEFzdlJ5emc&usp=sharing

random associations found in FA, Pathoma, and UW, currently 522 cards:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ApZvgjtaB02ddEZuMVhXVFlqbTdKd2JyREtfVEdNaXc&usp=sharing

These can be plugged into various ipad apps (flashcard plus) and online notecard websites.

Any thoughts on how to use this during 5 weeks of dedicated study time? Or is it pretty much too late?

With a week left to go, I've been using nicknaylor and tiedyeddog's pharm flash cards. They have been awesome and I just flag the ones I get wrong to review later on.

Probably too late to use the anki of everything, but if you can narrow it down to those areas you're weak in, I think you can be highly effective with them in your last 5 weeks.

I agree that the anki cards have been nothing but helpful. At first i was incredulous to their usefulness, but in such a short amount of time I believe that they will boost my score.

My question to everyone is how do I import naylor&ddog google doc into flash cards?

I usually do about 400 cards a day on random. There are around 7k cards, so 400/day is a good pace

If they're already tagged (at the bottom of the cards there's a field called "Tags") you can sort in the browser using "tag😛harm" or whatever the tag is (or just click the button in the PC browser). If they aren't, you can do a search in the browser with any term and then just tag all of the ones that pop up for future sorting...if you come across one that was mis-tagged later in your reviews, it's easy enough to change tags until they're all organized.

Once they're already tagged, you can create Custom Study decks out of the original, main deck by hitting "Custom Study" and changing the sort to "Review cards by tags". This makes a cram deck of only the cards you were looking to study right then.

Alternatively, you can use the tags to create subdecks for the large deck, the only real advantage here being that the separations are permanent and you can set different review schedules for each subdeck so that every time you review the overall deck you see, for example, 80 cards of type A, 30 of Types C and D, and only 10 or so of Type E.

If you're not already using the desktop agent for all of your organizing and sorting, you're missing out. It's 80x easier than doing it on AnkiDroid.

Sorry, upon re-reading the deck description I saw this:

For your first pass, I suggest you make filtered, subject-wise decks with cards sorted in the order added. You might have to fiddle around a bit to make the order conform exactly to first aid (especially with biochemistry where you will need the provided sub-tags) but mostly you should be fine as long as you do each filtered deck after you have read through the corresponding first aid chapter once.

So it sounds as if they are already ordered, as long as you change them from random sorting, AND already tagged!

Hey thanks alot mehc012 !! i get impatient trying new things

still trying to figure out how to make the seperate permanent decks, will bug u again if i cant get around it

thanks again

I'm having trouble opening the document....its asking me to choose an application to open it once I download it? Does anyone know which application to choose?
p.s. i have a mac

1st aid is gold for biochem. HY neuro is good for neuro, but doesn't cover drugs. If your class hasn't covered drugs, don't worry about them though

Really? Can you post a few that are not in the extra/mnemonic part and may be serious enough to actually cause you to get a lower score?

Things like the ploidy of the spermatocytes during Meiosis I. But the image they were made from is also incorrect.

It shows the primary spermatocytes as being 4N, but they're 2N and 4C (having replicated their chromosomes) they then divide to become secondary spermatocytes which are 1N and 2C.

Stuff like that, that's probably drive more by the First-aid errata than anything else.

I just looked up the card you have referenced, but I see that it had been corrected in the text:

Spermatogonium starts out 2N,
becomes a 2N, 4C (diploid, 4 chromatids) primary spermatocyte
(diploid = 2 chromosomes; also, each chromosome here has 2 chromatids each)

Any other examples?

Any one have a set that contains individual drugs with mechanisms of action? I tend to memorize a drug just because it is associated with a list or other drugs in it's class and then when I see the drug alone, I forget what it does.

Been using this for the past month and it has made me so happy while studying for step 1. I feel like it's my first time actually remembering stuff in med school... (finally feel smart again!)

So yea, seriously just returned to SDN just because I was so happy to see SDN supporting Mr. Sly Faux. (And yea, only found this because I was googling the set to send the link to my friend).

Now back into the step 1 rabbit hole... 🤣

OH also excited to check out Cole's pharm drug stuff (#1 biggest thing I'm worried about with step 1... druggggs y u have such awful names?!)

This deck is no longer working from the website, it says 700 cards loaded and gives errors. Can someone please share this again or send me the deck?

Try opening the deck up in a new profile in Anki. There is something wrong with the note types.

How do you plug in the info to a notecard website?

Is anybody using this on Android? What app are you using?

Also, how would I sort them by Organ System on Android? Right now I'm only able to use the whole deck at once.

Ankidroid...it's free!
Open the deck
Hit your phone's settings or menu button
Select 'Filter/Cram'
Type in your filter just as it would be phrased in the PC version
Profit.

Is there a way to remove the reverse cards? You can select them all by searching for card:reverse but if you delete them the forward card gets deleted too -____-

Easy, non-search-requiring method: Open one card which has a reverse. Select "Cards...". Delete the 'Reverse' card tab. NOTE: This will get rid of the reverse of ALL Anki cards using this Card template. I would not recommend this method.

To do it more preferentially/cleanly, use whichever search term you need to select the population of cards which you do not want to have a reverse. Select them all in the Browser and then hit "Change Note Type". Change them to 'Basic' notes, which do not have a reverse. Make sure to clean your database afterwards.

This deck seems to have many different templates with a reverse side, because when I try the 2nd method it gives an error that I have to choose notes of only one type. But the first method worked, although I can only delete a couple reverse cards at a time because of all the different templates it seems. Thanks for the tip!

OK, here's my new recommendation, then, because it is inefficient and problematic to have your card templates so scattered.

Open the Browser.
On the left, you should see a list of all of your Card templates. In your case, many of them may have the same name.
Pick one of the identical 'Basic' or 'Reverse' templates and give it a unique name - like 'MyBasic'. ('Edit', 'Change Note Type', 'New Note Type', 'Manage', 'Rename') It's easiest to pick the one with the most cards in it for this step.
Click on each of the other templates. This should display all of the cards in your deck which use that template. After clicking the template, select all of those cards and 'Change Note Type' to MyBasic.
Once all of your cards are converted, go to ('Edit', 'Change Note Type', 'New Note Type', 'Manage') This should show you a list of the available templates and how many cards there are of each type. All of your 'Basics' and 'Reverse's should be empty except for the one you moved them into. Delete all of the empty note types. ('Delete')

Now all of your cards will be forward only, and your database/browser will be a LOT cleaner. Now any changes you make to your MyBasic card template will affect ALL of your cards instead of chunks. It's worth the extra steps.

I think the link to the First AId anki flash cards is dead. Can anyone give me a new link? This would save my life
