**My intention is not to attack anyone, please do not take offense to my comments.**

I have been reading this forum for some time now. My husband is a FTD and is currently applying to schools and I have to say something.

One trend I have noticed is many people apply to schools and go to interviews with no intention of attending because either they don't like the school, can't afford the school, already accepted in their dream school or they are just bored and cruel and ruining it for others, grow up please.

If you have no intention of attending the school don't apply, don't go to the interview and don't ruin for the others out there. for example...

  • there are those who go to the interview who say they cannot afford the school....you go to the interview come back then post on SDN that you cant go to the school because it is too expensive...well what about the $600 you spent to go to the interview, if you can't "afford it" how can you afford to waste $600 for the interview...
  • then there are those who are already in the dream school and go to the interview to visit the city...are you serious? the school isnt paying for your accommodation or transportation so why dont you go visit the city on your own time freely and enjoy yourself rather than boring yourself with a school you are not interested in.
I know most of you are going to say who cares...why are you so upset about this, and this is why:

If one cannot extend common courtesy and use their judgment, I seriously doubt they have the maturity to be a physician. Grow up please, it's sad that these individuals one day will earn their doctorate and will be treating patients. Yeah, yeah yeah, I know the world is not a perfect place, but show some maturity, drop this childish behavior, or be smart and don't post it.

Hey, if you have some insight on why people do this, please post your comments, I would like to understand why this occurs.

On a positive note, I would like to say thank you to those who decline interviews to schools because they are already in their dream school and those who do the right thing.

Agree with you completely. Such candidates who are already accepted and have decided to join a particular school. should morally & ethically decline the interview invite from any further school, if they dont wanna join rather than creating a FALSE COMPETETION for the actual candidates who are still out there battling desperately to get into school...
all are striving to become American dentists.. FIRST STEP IS TO BEHAVE ACCORDING TO AMERICAN ETHICS OF PROFESSION. If you CANNOT , then you might be accepted into any presitigiuos dental school, I say straight that YOU DONT DESERVE to be here.

even i do agree..if any one is not interested to take admission....please reject the interview, because it will decrease the chances of others being waitlisted and ultimately it will help them plan their future accordingly. it will save a lot of time for others.....

Toothfairyqueen, you said it better than me - morally & ethically - these two words are the basis of any medical profession in this country. if you cannot adhere to these standards, you don't deserve to be here.

And what's funny is most people come to America for the opportunities that are not available in their home country, and as a direct result of their childish behavior - they are killing opportunities for others....hypocrites?

I got accepted two schools on Dec 1..one of them my dream school. I made my decision and notified the other school within 2 weeks. I received a third invite from Temple in Feb but I respectfully declined cuz I had already been accepted to the school I want to attend. I think people who do this (school is too expensive) want to have back-up options in case something doesn't work out. I mean if you interviewed at an expensive school and didn't get in anywhere else, ofcourse you would go to the expensive school. Your frustration is legitimate but I think people who have good scores and who have put themselves in this position of luxury have earned it as well. And this is a competition after all.

I understand the frustration and can relate to both mrdbds and toothfairy. But again dentalpath is right, those who have options would like to weigh their options and make the decision that is best for them. Agreed that when they do that they create competition for other but I believe not everyone is going to 2nd and 3rd interviews with the intention of creating false competition, they are trying to figure out what is best for them and make decision based on those circumstances.
For instance couple of yrs ago, someone I know got into NYU after paying her deposit she got accepted into a 2 yr dental school closer to home, it made more sense to her going to less expensive school so she had to withdraw from NYU in the last minute. That spot in NYU most probably didn't get filled.
In the end everyone here is trying to get into a dental school, the reality is it is easy for some but hard for others. I have shed my tears so I know what the feeling is but again it might be little childish on our parts to assume that everyone out there is morally and ethically wrong in going to more than one interview. People have different reasons for doing the things they do and perhaps it is justifiable to them.

I have to say something.

First of all, nobody knew how many interview calls he/she would get before applying for schools. The more school you apply the more chance you will get invitation. Isn't this true? It is fair for everybody to apply as many as they can, isn't it? So there is nothing wrong for FTDs to apply MANY schools.

Secondly, how do you know which school is your dream school before you get interviewed? Beside the tuition, there are many other factors for interviewees to consider the offer: the school reputation, the program setup, the faculty, the location of the school, feedbacks from current student, etc. You wouldn't know many of these things before you attend the interview. You may change your perception after the interview. So there is nothing wrong for FTD to attend as many interview as possible.

Thirdly, Most schools ask for deposit from the candidates if they accept the offer. By this way the schools prevent the candidate holding multiple seats from different schools. It is very RARE that any FTD would accept many offers and hold them for a while. If such thing happened before, either this FTD is a rich brat or he/she is crazy.

Lastly, every competition has winners and losers. When Roger Federer won the 2010 Australia open, did any other player complain that he should not attend the game since he already won so many Grand Slam singles? So instead of blaming other FTDs taking away your interview chances, why don't you ask them for how to polish your resume? Without your own improvement, you will have much more frustration next year.

Good luck to you.

dentalpath, sarika, and happyk9 you all make valid points, I understand and agree with what you are saying.

But I think there may be confusion on what I am trying to point out...

I am not saying you should apply to only one school ...that is not my point by all means. And my point is not that you should only go to one interview or the first interview you get only. If someone gets more than one interview, they should definitely attend all if they are unsure which school they want to go to. My point was to those who go to an interview knowing they do not want to go to the school, for whatever the reason it may be. Those are the individuals I do not understand. Many people have posted that they are going to an interview "for fun". Okay, I understand that if you have an interest in a school and after the interview you want to decide between 2 because you are unsure, that is totally fine and understandable. As dentalpath said

"I think people who have good scores and who have put themselves in this position of luxury have earned it as well."

He is totally right, you should have a right to choose, you have worked hard. And I have nothing against competition. What I find disheartening is the unnecessary competition and lack of common courtesy created by those who have no intention what so ever to attend that school but go to the interview anyways.

I hope you are right sarika:

"I believe not everyone is going to 2nd and 3rd interviews with the intention of creating false competition, they are trying to figure out what is best for them and make decision based on those circumstances."

But for those who are going "for fun", and creating false competition, this message was intended for them, not to attack anyone or hurt those who have earned interviews and behaved professionally by accepting/rejecting appropriately.

And happyk9, I am not blaming anyone for taking away interview spots as you said, if you deserve it, good for you. My point was to those who do not plan on going to the school and go for the interview anyways. And as far as determining a "dream school", I disagree, with the internet, SDN and other info available online, all the things you mentioned are available on a schools website and can be found by researching a school. You can easily determine a schools rep, curriculum, facilities and faculty background on a schools website which anyone should do prior to going on an interview or applying. For example, if you know a school has a bad reputation, you are not going to apply to it, and that info you are not going to find out on an interview...

I totally agree to what you said. Because I have been through this, and with my personal experience I would say, I was accepted to 2 schools but honestly I was interested in the 2nd school but one cannot be sure which school an individual gets through. Like the school I was interested, I was selected from the waitlist but in the mean time I got an acceptance from another school so I had to take it. But then afterwards, I declined their admission and took the 2nd school.

So sometimes its the only option we have so we go for it. I totally understand the anxiety students have, who do not get interview calls but I guess we are all just part of a system.

I really like the Roger Federer example, strikes right on point !!!!

No offense to mrsbds, but I want to say something about what you said on determining a school.

Many times we do not really know what their curriculum is until we go for the interview. All the schools which offer the DDS/DMD program for FTD are reputed, so we cannot determine anything special from their websites. Each school points out their best on the website so we cannot chose a school seeing a website.

When a student personally attends an interview, and their orientation, you will notice that each school has a way of teaching so it is then that a student decides which school he/she is comfortable with. This is the case when you get multiple opportunities.

But then if someone has just one choice, then most of them anyway go for it as no one wants to waste another precious year re-applying. Again there is no offense to anyone here, everyone works really hard to get through this phase which is completely understandable.

no offense taken at all

and you are right, and interview can make or break a decision on where you want to go. but for the most part, i think everyone knows what their school of choice is and unless going to the interview completely shows something amazing/horrible, majority of info you would think is previously available...

just my thoughts, not here to offend anyone or tear anyone down, was just sharing what was on my mind.

Hi
So far I applied to many schools but not invited anywhere, well I dont think this is because of people who get multiple opportunites, it is upto them whether to decline iv or not, what ever may be the reason. I believe if ones application is really strong ,we wont even need to be here discussing it...one thing s for sure try as we might we will only get what God has chosen for us , when he has chosen for us ....that does not mean that we stop working hard, just want to say to evryone , do not lose hope...our tym will come too!!!! best of Luck 🙂

superlike what aims said.if it is yours u will get it.that does not mean stop trying.do your part and if it is meant to be you will get it.🙂

last year, there was one person who had payed a deposit in TWO diff cali schools and waited till june to send in a decline to one school.
Such acts - Not cool.
