for tdd340, i am referring to physicians. I didnt think this website was for PhD's
thoughts......
i am thinking of following in my fathers' footsteps.

You need to clarify your poll. Both my parents are doctors, neither are physicians.

I think it's clear (if not stated) that he means physicians, and not any kind of doctor.

I think he means real doctors, not PhD or DPT types.

My dad was an anesthesiologist but retired in 1993 to start an investment business. I always told myself that I wasn't going to do medicine because he did it, but I found myself drawn to it.

I am deeply interested in surgery b/c I am hands on. Anesthesia puts me to sleep

I grew up 2 minutes away from where my dad grew up, went to the same college, I'm leaning toward the same med school... God help me if i do the same specialty...

Anesthesia puts a lot of people to sleep

I thought parent who was/is an MD was implied in the question. What is CPT? And, is anyone else irritated by chiropractors calling themselves "doctors"?

They aren't the only ones who use the title doctors. There are doctors of oriental medicine, doctors of naturopathy, doctors of nursing (N.D.) as well as PhD's in virtually the majority of fields and Doctors of physical therapy, etc. so you'd have to start getting irritated at a lot of other groups too. A lot of groups have a "Doctoral" program. Even pharmacists are considered doctoral candidates in that they have a Pharm D degree.

That said, I don't have any physicians in my family but do have a lot of family friends who are physicians. I know of at least one person that took over their father's thriving Cardiology practice and is doing very well. The person's spouse is also a physician as is their sibling and sibling's spouse. The sibling and sibling's spouse are in 2 completely different fields. The person who took over the father's practice is the only one to have followed directly into their parent's footsteps because even their spouse is in another field from my understanding. Another family friend has 3 kids and 2 of them went into completely different fields then them as well but all 3 kids are going into medicine.

I think the majority of those who have parents as doctors don't necessarily go into the same field as their parents due to differing interests, a desire for lifestyle specialties, etc. But they follow their parents footsteps in the sense that they go to med school.
