? For those with Sick Science GPAs (like 3.6+)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I noticed some folks here have some pretty sick GPAs in the sciences. 🙂

I am seriously struggling with keeping myself motivated to study chemistry. I like the material but the process for acquiring the information is painful for me.

Advice?
Get used to it because there are some topics in dental school that studying chemistry would be a reward (eg. biomaterials).

You read dWorks's post in your other thread.

If you don't do good, you won't get in. There is your motivation.

That's mine anyway.

Fear is the largest driving force for me; When I just think about sitting at the coffee table 10 years down the line at 6 in the morning getting ready to go mop toilets for the next 10 hours...

Regretting that I did not try my best for when it counted, 10 years ago...

The fear thing wasn't enough for me...get into and interested in the material. Go deeper into what you're learning and find examples of how they're used in actual life. For example you said you were in chemistry. I wasn't too much into galvanic cells but when I read up on how it was used in industry (cars, computers, portable batteries, etc) it was really cool to see that some of the chemicals that I was using in lab were directly related to how I function in everyday life.

Perfect example. Stay strong.

Fair Enough.

I like the Barry Soetoro, er, I mean "Obama" quote...so true, what a liar, er, I mean lawyer. 🙂

We're all living in just another third world banana republic at this point...

🙂. You listen to Gerald Celente?

He, Pat Buchanan, and Ron Paul called It years and years ago...and I've never heard them sing a different tune.

They have been right BANG BANG BANG, right down the line.

But I don't just listen to them...I listen to anyone with reason and intelligence.

For example, sometimes I do turn Beck off. And Rush and Palin I turn off much more often. Sean Hannity: never turn him on.

And I never open my ear canals to patently *****ic shills such as Jon Stewart, or Mr. Obama for that matter. They are tools just as much as Bush I and II were (are) tools in the first degree. McCain was even more dangerous in my opinion than comrade Obama.

Thanks for the GREAT advice so far everyone. Hope this thread doesn't get too far off topic...but after all, this is the internet and it makes it kind of fun actually when a thread gets derailed like a 1 million ton locomotive at 100 MPH straight off the edge of the grand canyon.

I would never visit a dentist who would silly, modern lingo like "sick", just to fit in. They might as well pierce their ears. 😀

Get use to taking in a lot of info, memorizing it and spitting it back out. A lot of my dental student friends tell me that rote memorization is a big part of dental school. This is true for the DAT as well.

In terms of motivation, everything you are doing now is to get into dental school. When it comes down to it, whoever wants it more will get it.

You cannot open your ears to Mr.Obama or people on the left, but will do so for the Fox News Channel? The same people that bring you such great stories as the "terror mosque"? You are hilarious. Try to get the viewpoint from both sides and formulate your own opinions. Both sides have some great ideas and also some horrible ones.

To the OP, your motivation to study should be Sarah Palin. If you do not educate yourself, you will, like her, think that Africa is country, not a continent. lol

I found that when doing just about anything in life, going through the painful processes is exactly what will make me or anyone else better. That's my motivation, that I can endure, work hard and get through it. It is brutal, no doubt.

Weekends and holidays were a blessing.

Notecards. Especially in biology. For chemistry, if it's the math (i.e. pH, molarity/molality) do as many problems as you need to to get comfortable with the equations and make notecards with the equations with the equation name or what it's use for on the back. Doing the problems is probably the best advice I can give because once you have done something (be it a mechanism or an equation) several times, you will eventually be able to look at a problem and know where to start and how to go about getting the right answer. Hope this helps a bit and good luck 👍

Don't you think it speak volumes about conservatives that you've grouped Jon Stewart in with conservative "news anchors," even though he's a satirist and comedian entertainer? :meanie:

BTW: How do you reconcile Ron Paul's advocacy for very limited government with Pat Buchanan's opposition to free trade ideology? Also... what do you have to say about Pat Buchanan's support for intelligent design as a legitimate way to educate our youth? You realize you are going into a science-heavy field, right?

Africa's geographical status is the least his worries; he, like Palin, could end up thinking there is no scientific importance to things like "fruit flay research.....yah I kid ya nat!"

I believe one of the reasons you may not be motivated is because you haven't tried your best yet. I think its just human nature to do things that we think we are good at, but to be good at anything you have to give it your best shot, practice and then see the results. You will be good at Chemistry (and motivated to study) as long as you at least try to understand and learn the fundamentals behind it. I believe Chemistry is less memorization (except formulas) and more understanding the concepts. When your concepts are clear, good scores and motivation to keep those scores will follow.
