Good question. According to AAMC, there shouldn't be any credit penalty associated with it. Check out the second question here. Hopefully that's true.

No, it doesn't affect your credit b/c your account is still update to date. If you are over 90 days late on your payments then you will be reported most likely (some do it at 60 days, but overall its 90 days for most creditors).
