hi everyone,
everyone seems to be so desperate for dds programs, why are there no discussinos and no active threads abt residency programs for foreign dentists that permit us to practise in 18 states in US roughly, no big loans, no dental school, some states let us work there as a dentist after only one year of AEGD, like virginia..........why noone is noticing this, n there r no threads discussing it??
does anyone know of any residency programs still accepting foreign dentists for AEGD or any other 1-2 yrs residency programs for this year, post match????please reply if somone knows, i will be more than keen to join n then practise in virginia.........

I guess not and more while all the rules are due to change better to keep the safe side .But did you mean there would not be any loan for residency programs?

Could you list few residency programs that accept foreign dentists including AEGD and graduate dentist? I thought these programs are for US dentists. What are the requirements to get in? thanks.

I can think of a few perio programs - UT San Antonio,UT Houston,University of Washington in Seattle,Baylor,University of Iowa..
Not to discourage you...but these programs are intensely competitive....U have to have really high GPA,a great standing in your class, research experience and what not.And it is equally expensive.
Hope this helps

Is there any residency program in Temple or Upenn? Does NBDE part II increase your chance of admissions?
Will be glad to get a reply.

University of Rochester AEGD program for International Students, is a program for foreign trained dentists. 25 months in duration, tons and tons of clinical experience. From the beginning of the program you will see about 12 patients a day. Practice anything you can treatment plan, including implants, veneers, prostho....anything. Very hard to get in...8 -10 students accepted yearly with a class of 5 entering in June and 4-5 in dec.
Most accepted students have a lot of experience for eg. Phd, specialities, some students have to accept the Masters program (not a speciality but a masters in Science, since this is a research univeristy) here and then get into AEGD 2 year program thus equaling 3 years. Good reference letters, good gpa and board scores are a must, even though there is no cut off. With over 400 internationals interviewing, it is not very easy to get in.

However, I encourage everyone to apply. You never know you might get in. Application fee is 100 dollars and no tution is required for this program (only program in north america like this and you get licenced when completed). So go for it..

Does Ph.D. with a number of publications have some advantage in admission? Are there any programs that do not require board exam? Thanks.

AEGD stands for "Advanced Education in General Dentistry Program". Ususally it is for US DDS. But I don't understand why someone alreading having license would stop practice (thus stop earning money) and get into school for AEGD or residency program (usually have to pay money).

My advice for any foreign trianed dentist thinking about going into a residency rather than doing the DDS is to plan carefully as there's a limited number of states that will grant a license based on residency training and the rules keep changing every now and then. For peace of mind i recommend doing the DDS so you can be eligible for licensure in all states no questions asked.

This is a very good piece of advice. I would agree. But then why residency program is so competitive (means lots of people still want to get in)? Are there something that we don't know is attacting people?

Casimec,

I am studying NBDE part 1 right now and found it rather challenging. What do I need to do to pass this exam (with score 90 or higher)? Could you share your opinion in the following matter?
Materials used, depth of study (glance through or recite), how many hours it took, what is the best strategy to study? Is 4 month part time (2 hours/weekday + 4 hours/weekend day) study enough?
Thanks

This program historically favors green card holders or US citizens, although that is not formally disclosed, but if you keep track of applicants and who gets in, you can see the strong trend. You can still give it a shot though, who knows, good luck 🙂
