I was talking with a German friend of mine who is a medical student in Innsbruck Austria. He is getting ready to come to the US for an externship and he asked if American dental students can do externships to foreign countries (namely European countries). I told him I knew for certain that dental students can do externships here in the US, but as for the foreign variety I told him I was far from certain on that but that I would find out.

It's not a major concern, just something I would like to know for the sake of answering Tobias' question. Has anyone here heard of a dental student doing an externship in Europe?

Hi,
I was all over this question a few months ago, trying to find any way my school would let me do some kind of study abroad. Unfortunately I didn't have much luck. We do an exchange program with a dental school in Japan during spring break. That's really cool and I'm hoping I get picked to do that this year. The only foreign externships I've come across are organized through the Alpha Omega dental fraternity. You can head to Israel, France, England, Vancouver...I don't know much more about it.
I think as long as you're willing to do the externship during your vacation time you can do whatever program you find. The school might have a say in the matter if you plan on missing classes/clinic.
If anyone else knows something I'd love to hear it too. Thanks.

Thanks for the info guys. I've done a little looking around at the websites of the schools (I only looked at those that I will be applying to) and I haven't noticed much mention of foreign opportunities, other than for the Univ. of Iowa.

Penn is not on my list by the way- I wasn't impressed when I went to visit- but the link did prove helpful anyways. Thanks!

Arizona allows students to do externships anywhere, as long as the attending dentist is calibrated beforehand to provide adequate grading of the student's efforts.

Arizona students must complete 5-6 externships (one month each) for graduation.

Calibrated? How do you calibrate a dentist? It sounds painful.....lets hope they use plenty of K-Y for that. :meanie:

Sorry, all joking aside, thanks for the the info Gavin

You can calibrate anything. It just means you compare that thing/person to a given standard, usually with the goal of bringing it up to that standard. They calibrate testing examiners for instance to ensure the grading is fair for all students, regardless of examiner. Yes, I am an uber-dork.

Sweet deal at AZ. I wish my school was more willing to do that.
