I am in the process of doing APPIC applications and will be applying to state correctional facilities, state hospitals, and FBOP medical centers which all have rotations in both correctional and forensic psych. Prior to my current prac site at a state facility where I do psychological/psychosexual evaluations, I spent two years at a VA doing general outpatient tx and PTSD tx - so I am fairly familiar with what many VA sites would be looking for in an applicant. However, I am not as familiar with the culture at other state/federal correctional facilities and what they would want.
Primarily, I am thinking of the fact that the applicant I initially planned on being was oriented toward the VA (and mostly VA sites that would be at MOST a 25/75 split of assessment and therapy) - emphasizing psychotherapy TO, EBPs, and multicultural competence. These correctional/forensic sites tend to focus on SMI and be much more assessment-heavy, perhaps splitting time 50/50 or 75/25 between assessment and individual/group psychotherapy. Would love some guidance on tailoring my essays toward this clinical workload/the culture of these settings as it relates to emphasis on contextual models of psychotherapy/social justice.
