Forensic Dentistry

I would like to know if any of you have any interest in this field of dentistry, and if you have any experience, please feel free to share some insights to this profession.

I am currently working as a DNA analyst, and would like to eventually after finishing dental school (currently applying) practice as a general dentist, while allocating some of my time to working as a forensic dentist. From my understanding it will not be a full time job, but more of a need based position.

Some of the things I would like to know is what kind of training while in dental school can one get, and if you know which schools pay special attention to this field, or at least have some kind of program for those that are interested in the forensic aspects of dentistry. So far I know about San Antonio, and their post DDS program. Any others?

yes that is a helpful website, and I've met several ppl that are the members. Do you know of any program at your school in specific? Are there any elective courses that you may take that are geared towards forensic odontology?

At university of Kentucky, our path professor served as a forensic dentist for some time in the state. He gave some lectures about this field, and showed some cases to get a feel about what was involved. I have taken some CE courses (at the Chicago midwinter) just to get some exposure. The investigative process seems interesting, but I'm not sure how excited I would be about testifying in court for some of these cases. The investigation involved in accidents involving mass death also seems a little disturbing. I don't think you will find alot of exposure in dental school, but rather with CE courses. Check into the midwinter courses this year and find the forensic dental course (i think it is offered every year). If you contact the presenter he can give you direction for training.

You might want to contact Dr Robert Dorion, who works at McGill University. He teaches courses in forensic dentistry and is the founding member and past president of the American Academy of Forensic Odontology. Note aside- Dr Dorion is good friends with the best selling author Dr Kathy Reichs, who happens to be a forensic anthropologist. I have read a few of her novels (some take place in Montreal) such as "Deja Dead" and "Death du Jour " - they were quite the page turners!

At Creighton University we have Dr. Hermsen who has worked at many of the large mass casualty incidents (9/11, etc.) and I believe that we can take an elective in foresic dentistry from him junior/senior year. Right now I'm in a table clinic group doing forensic dentistry research for him...fun. 😀
