For those looking for a postdoc in forensic evaluation, I wanted to give a shout out to Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, VA.
You can view all the details of the postdoc using this link online: Postdoctoral Fellowship (Forensic Psychology) (Restricted position)
I am the current Postdoc Fellow and have been VERY happy with my experience so far. The postdoc centers on completing competency to stand trial, mental status at the time of the offense (insanity), violence risk assessment, the occasional custody evaluation, and some treatment experiences with our unique NGRI treatment program. Specific training opportunities are arranged through UVA - ILPPP to provide a basic factual knowledge of how to conduct these evaluations. Additionally, a weekly forensic seminar is offered which follows the ABFP reading list thoroughly and an optional Case Law Seminar is made available to those interested. There is some flexibility in taking on side testing cases if the postdoc is interested (neuro, cognitive, personality, diagnostic).
Great opportunities and I have grown in my knowledge and practice of forensic psychology immensely in my short time here.
On top of that, the training environment is very collegial and I am treating as an early career psychologist, given freedom to make my decisions moving forward but provided as much or as little consultation as I'd like. My supervisors are all brilliant but friendly and approachable!
Finally, the surrounding area is lovely to live in. Williamsburg, VA is known for Colonial Williamsburg so it's a touristy but suburban area for those with families. For those seeking a city feel, Richmond is a 40 min commute, which is in the opposite side of traffic typically. You get to experience the best of all four seasons in the mild climate.
Feel free to reach out to me (or post here) if you'd like more info. Or email the training directors - they respond fast and are candid in their responses.
