I left my tie at home and my interview is tomorrow. How bad would it look if I didn’t wear a tie?
I would notice an applicant not wearing a tie. Not going to necessarily sink their chances with me, but it would certainly make them stick out in a negative way.
- Are you staying with a student host? If so, see if you can borrow one of theirs (or from one of their male classmates)
- Are you staying at a hotel? Do they have any spare ties (or can a night shifter who's leaving let you borrow theirs? Desperate times call for desperate measures..)
- Buying one from a 24-hour store can work too as
@StayWandering suggested, depending on how far one is.
Just make sure that you can still get enough sleep if you opt for option 3. The optics of falling asleep during the day are even worse than not having a tie (it's happened more often than you would think).
If you are unable to find a tie before the interview, keep your chin up and make the best of the situation. In my opinion, making a quick mention of it at the start of the interview would be the best way to lessen the impact. This goes against the general advice of not bringing attention to negatives. However, in this case, the negative will be fairly obvious, so might as well address it and move on.
e.g "Dr. X, thank you again for this opportunity. Before we chat, I wanted to apologize for my not having a tie. I'm not usually one to forget things like this. It definitely will not happen again. I am very excited to be here though"
