Former Engineers becoming Anesthesiologists

I have heard that alot of former enginners do well in Anesthesia. Being an engineer my self, I am curious as to why this is the case. Is it b/c of the attention to detail required for anesthesia? Or the integration of alot of info at the same time. Anybody out there who is a former engineer and now on the road to Anesthesia or already an Anesthesiologist have an idea? 🙂

Our engineering exes say that the physiology involved in anesthesiology is easy to grasp and simply an organic variation of what they learned for engineering. The anesthesia machines, principles of volatile anesthetics, etc. are too basic for them.

My undergrad degree was Chemical Engineering. I feel like there are a lot of similarities and that anesthesia is by far the best fit of all medical specialties. The physiology and pharmacology involved have parallels with many engineering subjects, fluid dynamics, mass/heat transfer, kinetics, process control, etc. I think anesthesia is much more interesting too.

I'm a former civil/structural engineer. But that's where the similarities ends. unless you think the gas machine is aesthetically pleasing.

I thought I was the gas machine... and yes I might be going out on a limb, but to some I am aesthetically pleasing.
