So I just started looking around for housing near CSU and have found mostly 3-4 bedroom houses/townhouses. What has everyone else found? What is a good price for a 1-2 bdrm place?

I spent a long time looking on Craigslist last year and found that the few promising leads all fell through, though a lot of my classmates got their places through there. I ended up finding my current place on www.northerncoloradorentals.com ... I am absolutely of the mindset that I cannot have roommates (did that for the last 10 years... and just couldn't anymore, so I was all about a one bedroom 🙂 ),

I got a one bedroom condo, less than a mile from campus, with a washer/dryer/dishwasher, wood fireplace, little balcony thing, no extra money per month for my cats, and lots of off-street parking for $550 a month. I think that seems to be around the average (or maybe a smidge below) for one bedrooms. I think my place is right around 650 sq ft. Water, trash, and snow removal are included in my rent. My electric bill averages around $25 a month (though the middle of the winter it was pushing $50)...

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me 🙂

I won't be applying for another year or two, but I'm afraid that I'll end up having to buy. I have 2 cats and 2 dobermans, and most places that allow dogs exclude dobies. Are there more dog friendly places there?

I won't be going to CSU, and I haven't spent much time in Fort Collins, but my whole family is from Aspen, so I can give a teeny bit of help.
I will tell you that the closer you get to Aspen, the more dog friendly the places get. Also, it's pretty common to commute in Colorado (Aspen to Fort Collins is ridiculous, of course, but living in a different city is not unheard of).
Also, a LOT of people rent out rooms or "mother-in-law" suites in their houses, especially in the off seasons.
Again, some of this info may not be helpful, since I haven't spent a lot of time in Fort Collins, but I thought I'd give any info I had in hopes it might help someone.

I have found the prices in Fort Collins to be reasonable (at least compared to Atlanta where a one bedroom ran me $959/mo).

The one place I'm looking is the River Glen Apartments off of Shields, its between Lake and Drake roads so you have easy access to campus and the VTH...

According to their website:

Apartment Pricing:
FloorPlan Beds Baths SquareFeet Price Term Deposit
Rapids 2 1 895 750-770 6-12 200.00
Brook 1 1 600 660-690 6-12 200.00
Stream 2 1 880 735-760 6-12 200.00
Waterfall 2 1 950 785-810 6-12 200.00

Pet Policy
Pets Allowed: Cats and Small Dogs

That's somewhat reasonable though I'm living in a two bedroom right now for the price of their one bedroom I may have to downsize : (

The other places I'm looking at are south of town (I'm not sure how far away I want to be from the campus since I like to ride my bike)

from what i understand they will email us a password to a website in may that other vet students post their places for rent. that will be super helpful! i am going to need to rent a room in a house because i have a dog that won't be small when he is full grown (50lbs-ish). and i want him to have a backyard 🙂

Hi all! I'm soo excited for all of you, but know how stressful the house hunting thing can be while you're still trying to stay focused on other things back in your home towns. If anyone is interested I bought from a wonderful realtor in this area who specialized in relocations. We flew out here for 2 days and in that time found the perfect house for us. If you would like her information PM me and I'll get that for you... I don't think I'm even allowed to post it here, but I think it can be helpful.

I would love to get a condo, considering that fort collins is a great town and I'm going to be there for a while, but I'm worried about not knowing the area well enough to decide which area I want to live in. I've only been to Fort Collins once to visit the school and I stayed less than 24 hrs! So I'm thinking of getting an apartment for a year and then deciding where to live...is anyone else in this predicament?

Also- for people who know Fort collins, where are the cool/fun/nice places to live? Downtown, Old Town... I would love to get any advice on this! Thanks 🙂🙂

btw- I am definitely a foodie (meaning, I love to cook, love to eat..) so with that in mind- is there a certain area I should look into?

When I asked about housing information, I was just told that it would be provided in mid-late May. I didn't know about this website, but it sounds like a good way to do it. It just makes sense what with most 4th years moving on and many 1st years looking for pet-friendly places...

Old Town! Not as many condos (you will need to go West for those) but I love being able to walk to most of the good food and bars.. and a quick commute to school... that said Fort Collins is small enough that most commutes are easy.

Any good info on buying a house with a little bit of land around the Fort Collins area? That may be an area I'll be interested in after vet school. 🙂

Check out coloproperty.com, it's pretty much got the whole MLS in it for this area.

Sweet...I was actually thinking of maybe living in or south of Cheyenne for numerous reasons (no state income or food tax, cheaper housing, less sprawl, etc) and was wondering if anyone ever tries to do that for the commute. Is CSU on the north side of town or the south (relatively speaking)?

I guess it's in the middle-south? The hospital is a mile south of the school. I have heard that when you're a fourth year you have to be within 20 minutes of the hospital when you are on call so that may impact your decision. I myself would never live all the way in wyoming - in the winter, sometimes they close I25 at wellington and 287 at Ted's Place (yes, that's what it's called), and I don't think you could get to Fort Collins.

Oops - I see you're thinking of after Vet School, so the 20 minute rule wouldn't matter.

I'ved lived in Wyoming for two years and thankfully they have only closed 287 (Between Laramie & Fort Collins) twice on me and I-25 (Between Cheyenne & Fort Collins) once. More than often they close I-80 on the pass between Laramie & Cheyenne. But there is plenty of cheap land in the Cheyenne area, its not a bad drive ~40 minutes, but during the winter that can go up to like 2 hours to travel that 40 miles. If I can remember some of the Cheyenne property sites I'll post them up here.

I was one of the relatively few that didn't get blown/slid off the road right before Christmas when I-29 between Kansas City and Omaha got closed off this last year. 😀 Although it turned a 5 hour trip into a 14 hour trip. I-70 runs through Columbia and that probably closes an average of every year or so (maybe every other year), so I'm no stranger to driving in bad weather. When I lived in Aurora, we actually got less snow and it melted much faster than a lot of the places we've lived! One of my classmates went to CSU for her undergrad and she said it's definitely the wind, not the amount of snow, that's what makes it tricky.
