FA's explanation of obligate anaerobes goes like this:

Generally foul smelling (short-chain fatty acids), are difficult to culture, and produces gas in tissue (CO2 and H2).

Can anyone explain why short-chain fatty acids make foul smelling? Or is this just random thing I just have to know? Many thanks in advance.

Foul-smelling = Bacteroides is important (e.g., for aspiration pneumonia / pulmonary abscess), but the short-chain fatty acid part is completely unnecessary and irrelevant.
