Hello,
I was wondering if anyone else has ever gotten in after applying four times?

My stats are:

sGPA 3.4
oGPA 3.5
DAT: 19AA, 18TS, 19PA, 19QR
Have six months of full time medical research
Lots of ECs and good LORs and also shadowing hours.

I am planning on retaking the DAT as it is now past 3 years old and will only reapply if I score atleast a 20 (my scores were from my first attempt in 08).
Also recommendations on where to apply I thought I had a good idea but maybe not. Thanks

thats weird. Your stats are not bad at all. DAT is fine.
What dental schools said about your previous applications?

On top of what wizi asked; how many interviews did you get last cycle?

This probably won't help you now, but what the heck kept you from retaking until now? You've had literally years to prepare, how have you not retaken and submitted by June 1? For a first time applicant they could just apply with that DAT and see what interviews come their way...but after 3 yrs of not getting in you think that you'd want it more and would do anything to get in.

Don't mean to flame, but this will go thru adcoms minds for reapplicants,
"how much has he improved, how much has he shown he wants it bad, ..."

I applied 4X. I would apply regardless of your DAT score after your retake. If you are not happy w/it, take it a third time. I did. Do not give up, keep uping your academic game (a MUST), and do anything that will show you are making changes/improvements in your application. Interviewers tend to like an applicant who has the quality of persistence.

.....as far as where to apply....not an easy one. Based on my stats, which are comparable to yours, and my situtation at the time (working hygienist slash family man slash 'more life experience' under my belt) I was advised to apply to my state school, some private schools with mid-range DAT scores, a few newer schools and some of the larger schools. The ones I applied to I thought were a good fit for me ie VCU, Nova, NYU, MidWestern, Louisville, Pitt just to name a few. I had a few scattered interviews, an insinuation from a few schools to give me one AFTER my first full year of Bio MS coursework and so on. hope this helps some

Hey,,, I am also re-applying and retaking DAT sometime soon!! My scores are from 2009 and soon to expired. I got about the same maybe lower in some areas...I was wondering if you got any interviews ? Good Luck...

What seems odd to me is that his scores are not too far off of the accepted average. That is why I was asking about interviews. If you got ample interviews and were rejected it seems like you may have other problems than the DAT. But by all means, if you can improve it do it. Just dont neglect other important parts of your application. Apply early, apply broadly, interview skills etc.

Interviews can be one reason. OP, how many schools did you apply to the first 3 times? When did you submit your apps? How are your LOEs? How many interviews did you get?

I'm guessing late submits or not applying to enough schools.

I wonder if the schools know that you are a 4th time reapplicant. If they do, then they probably will think something may wrong with you if you got dinged three years in a row by all your schools, and thus may be biased against you when reviewing your application this time around.

It's similar thought process about a 7th-year college student. There's something wrong if he/she still hasn't graduated after 4 or 5 years.

It seems to me that the OP doesnt want to answer these questions. 🙂

It seems like you applied with same DAT score all three times.

Did you improve your application each cycle?
Any academic probation?
Any other discrepancies?

Well, I was a 3 year reapplicant. what did you do different during those applications? Did you apply to more than just Iowa and perhaps minnesota, marquette, indiana etc..? You need to apply to at least 10 schools (look east coast and south). I shot for 15 school on my third time around. You also didn't retake your DAT..... why not!!!!??? I retook mine each cycle because it obivously didn't work out. I continued my shadowing, volunteering etc.. and I got 9 interviews off the bat. That's a big leap from 1 or 2 interviews when i only applied to 3-4 schools. Iowa is difficult to understand when it comes to their admissions.. They didn't like my DAT score of 18 and i'm out of state, yet other out of staters got in with a 17!!!?? How do I know this? Because they finally accepted me and i've been there a year now. I scored a 20 on my last DAT and finally they accepted me. YOu need to REVAMP that application because when a soda machine doesn't accept your dollar 5 times in a row do you keep trying it, or get a new dollar?
