For people interested in a specialty covered by one of their core rotations during third year, do most people do a second rotation at their home institute during fourth year?

I.e. Your interested in peds and rotate through during third year. Do most people rotate through again during fourth year or forego it in order to do an audition rotation somewhere else?

Usually you are required to do an acting internship at your home school as a MS4 and most people will do it in the specialty they are trying to match if possible. Its a great way to get letters in that specialty that have more impact (i.e. I worked with this student both as a MS3 and as an acting intern . . . ). Often people do AI's in that specialty on away rotations as well. I've technically done three AI's in Surgery this year.

At my school if you are interested in a core specialty the generic schedule they advise is
Aug - easy rotation or month off - get Step 2 out of way
Sep - SubI here - get accustomed to having more responsibility, can get another LOR in addition to one from 3rd year or strengthen the one from 3rd year if working with same attending
Oct - SubI at place of interest, can get another LOR to add on to completed app

Unless you were given a high amount of autonomy 3rd year AND the rotation was at the end of the year I would definitely do a Sub-I with your home program before an audition one
