So, for myriad reasons, I find myself wanting to take a vacation during fourth year but won't have anyone to travel with me during the times I have free (I don't smell bad, I promise!). I feel like I should escape from NRMP madness while I can.

Any recommendations for places to go? I live in New England but JetBlue has really cheap flights to the Caribbean...

I toured europe for 3 weeks on my own at the end of my 4th year. It was my first trip over there and it was great. I stayed in hostels and met a bunch of cool people, so traveling alone wasn't too bad. Personally, I think it's a nice way to go, since you get to do exactly what you want to do, when you want to do it. And in europe it's a little easier, I think, because there are so many other solo travelers around. Anyway, spend the money; it's worth it, and definitely go somewhere.

Depending on your financial situation, you could take an "eco-safari" into Costa Rica (e.g. explore some of the countryside during the day, and hotel room at night), or stay at a resort at the northern end of the country. I took a trip out there over a decade ago and loved it, but obviously I'm biased.

It depends on if you want to be lazy and be a beach bum or go see stuff. Rio has the best beach EVER to be lazy on and you could live out there since they bring around food and drink all day. The nicest people in the whole world and the restaraunts are amazing and cheap. The tickets is more expensive but once you get down there it is cheap.
In the carib, I like Cancun the best. It may not be as adventurous but the beach is pretty good, the bus system is super easy and cheap, fun dance clubs, great places to eat and some of the hotels are really luxurious. There isn't that much to do so it is lazy too.
The only other places in the carib I have been to are Cayman (too expensive), Belize (the islands of the coast are cheap but no luxury) and Cuba (illegal)
Check out Antigua, Guatamala for a cool and original place to go. Cheap, beautiful and the best food anywhere.
The above poster was right about Europe too. That is always cool and can be done cheap. Stay away from France though! 😉

Bermuda. Absolutely no crime. Gorgeous pink beaches. That funny brit accent. Good shopping. Very Relaxing. Somewhat pricey although they do have an all inclusive resort. The cruises there are pretty nice. I have been all over the world, to many of the caribbean islands including Cuba but Bermuda is my all time favorite. PM for pics if interested.

funny you mention this, I find myself in the same predicament. 🙂
