Frantz and Columbia

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i'm also interested in what anyone has to say about this. bump.

As far as I know, from what I've heard from people at Columbia and past threads on Frantz, there's no real formula for predicting your chances with getting accepted to Columbia (although there is the popular thank you note theory, which I think is a bunch of ****). If you're seriously interested in the school, just show that and hope for the best (keeping my fingers crossed because that's what I'm doing)

sachin,

have you written a separate letter of interest aside from your thank-you note?

From what I have heard, I don't think the thank you letter for Columbia is a "bunch of ****", especially if it is written by hand.

My interviewer [I have never seen nor interacted with Frau Franz] at Columbia was a Class I As$****, so I didn't bother writing a thank you note, and didn't hear from them again till I was accepted. I would have written a letter of disinterest if that occured to me at the time.

Hope that Helps.

On a related note, would it be appropriate to write a thank you letter of sorts to Dean Frantz. I interviewed there in mid-september and sent a thank you note to my interviewer (not Frantz) about two weeks later. Should I get waitlisted I would easily go ahead and write an LOI, but that would be in March, and I feel that it would be beneficial to get at least one letter off in the meantime. I was thinking to send a general letter of interest in Columbia to Dean Frantz and/or the admissions committee. I can appreciate how a lot of people feel that this is a waste of time and effort for something that is at either a blatant ass kissing measure to something that makes absolutely no difference at all, but for someone like me of mediocire stats who has been given unwarrented hope by the interview visit has to at least try and grasp at every straw. So back to my original question, would it be inappropriate to address a letter to Frantz sometime in January expressing my interest?

Hey

I got a letter from Dr frantz today, in response from to my thank you note. Anyone else get one? Just curious.

dr frantz and columbia are really nice about sending replies to all your letters. you can probably find the old thread with a thousand replies trying to analyze the exact wording of his replies and what they meant. just don't read too much into it 🙂

I also got a letter in response to my thank you note.

I had my interview with him on Tuesday. It went ok I guess, he's kinda hard to read.

Very nice man, very proper and very Doctorish.

He knew a lot about me from my app, which I think is a good sign. I was waitlisted last year, and had spoke to him over the summer a few times, and he remembered me (possibly why I got him this time).

I'm about to write my thankyou letter to him. Any advice about what to include?

Oh, and when do we find out?

Almost all the decisions go out February 15-ish. I interview with Dr. Frantz a few weeks ago too. I also wrote a thank you note. I just mentioned something interesting we discussed during the interview, mentioned what i really liked about the school - gave some examples, and thanked him for considering my application. Pretty standard, I guess. I didn't know he often writes back - that's pretty cool.

beginning of february we should start a thread about the letters that Frantz sent to us
I was reading last years and some of the wordings ("strongly in mind") seemed to be a positive indicator, but not always. plus, we'll have to keep in mind that Frantz changes his letter writing policy every year

and decisions go out on Valentine's Day, which is what I was told when I was there

The secretary at the office says that not everyone gets a letter from Frantz, Frantz chooses who to reply to, and it can only be a "good sign." Take that however you like.

Is it true that at Columbia, there's no admissions committee? Just Dr. Frantz and our interviewer? And i've also heard that Frantz is the one that ultimately makes the decision.

I think we all reached the conclusion last year that the wordings on the letter didn't correlate with acceptances. However, if you are interested in a school, any school, it does not hurt and only helps to let them know it. Afterall, you are just another folder to them until they know who you are, and where you stand on going there. It may get you interviews, it may get you in (hey, it got me in). Dr. Frantz is the key figure in the Columbia adcom. This does NOT mean he makes all of the decisions - I believe he listens carefully to interviewers recommendations for the first round of acceptances. IF YOU GET WAITLISTED, then it is a whole other story. By then, most of the adcom is not interviewing anymore and is back to their professional lives. Frantz is left to make all of the decisions. He likes to take credit for "hand picking" the class though, so I think ultimately he is the one who reviews recs from the interviewers and decides who is in or out. But don't worry, a lot of us in the first year class here did not interview with Dr. Frantz.
