It will definitely be something you will be required to explain during the application process and in interviews. It may hurt. But with sufficient evidence attesting to how you've matured/grown/gotten your act together since this incident, I think many schools will be willing to chalk it up as a stupid mistake.

On the other hand it wasn't just a one time thing. Drinking too much and getting into trouble once is one thing, but you don't just go from alter boy to having an illegal ID in one dumb night. It is easy to imagine how older, conservative admission committee members might interpret that as evidence of a disrespectful, irresponsible lifestyle.

So again, you'd better have some impressive, character-demonstrating experiences by the time you apply. I'm not trying to sound harsh or judgmental--I'm sure you are a great guy/gal. I'm just trying to think from an ADCOM member's perspective to help you understand how important it is for you to make sure they know that mistake is not representative of you as a person.

But at least its not academic dishonesty... that really IS the kiss of death.

If you aren't a cheater or a convicted felon then chances are your circumstances are recoverable. And by recoverable I mean your grades and standardized test scores should at least be on par and there should be no incidences from here on out.

Agreed. Just own up to it and be honest.

I was put on probation for a 'drinking in the room' violation...and... nothing happened. Nothing on background check, i wasn't 'arrested' so I don't even think I had to mention it in my apps. And I've been accepted no problem.

First of all, you're a ***** for letting a police officer see your fake ID. Hide it in an inside pocket or behind your bank card.🙄
You'll be fine. Write a brief explanation, including the community service, etc. Maybe you could do some health related time.
I had a fake ID at 18, they will chuckle.

Probation by your school should be mentioned on an application as it is an institutional action. In all likelihood, it wouldn't be an issue but it does have to be reported.

To the OP, you will need to list this on the application but I have not seen it be a deal breaker.

Academic dishonesty is another story but the prohibition against drinking for 18-20 year olds is a law that is not working on college campuses and many college presidents are discussing whether efforts should be made to change the law.

It's possible to still get into medical school. When I applied, I had some things on my record from before I got sober (some schools saw it, some didn't ask), and it wasn't a big deal for most schools (even having to discuss recovery--much more of a problem than being a college student who was caught doing something most people in college do anyway). I'm sending you a pm 🙂

Thanks everyone! I have calmed down and realized that I can definitely explain how much I have learned from this incident. It sucks but I am kind of glad it happened, it definitely helped me figure out my priorities. Thanks again everyone!
