I just joined this forum, and I am writing because I am freaking out about this whole application process!! Where do I begin thinking about which schools I should apply to? Also, since I am on quarter system I won't get my grades until end of June and won't be able to submit until beginning of July. Is this considered late and will it work against me? Thanks for any input.

You don' t think you need to wait till you get your grades at end of June. Just do it now....hopefully by this time, you got all the letter of rec and all those craps ready.

I don't like this process either, my advisors says average predent apply to 8-12 dental schools. I'm applying to 7 and I know it's the torture is about to start, just think of all the traveling I have to do to all these schools......well good luck

just submit this quarter's grades as in progress... it doesn't count against you...you have to update them later anyways (if i recall correctly...)
btw are you at ucla?

Im going to apply to ~20 schools. that might be excessive, but better safe than sorry.

suggestion. Get Official guide to dental schools from ADEA. It gives you stats and profiles of every dental school in the US.

If you have at least a 3.2 and a 18 DAT applying to more than 12 schools is crazy. Trust me, on this. only apply to schools that you would go to, not just back up schools.

I applied to 17 last year and officially ended up sending my app fees to 5-7 schools. got 10 interviews (yes, four schools gave me interviews without app fees). It will save you lots of dough.

Savvysearch,
Unless you're planning on doing something major this summer such as a dental clininc summer enrichment program, or volunteering to improve the oral health of a thirld world country, my man Desi is the one to listen to. Rather than applying to 20 schools, just go for the few you'd prefer then go for the ones that historically accept low GPA, low DAT score(i.e. University of Puerto Rico). The carribean is a hell of a lot nicer than a rejection letter. If you'd like better advice, post up your stats & extracurricular so people have an idea of what you're working with.
Best,
Diddy

Totally agree with everyone on applying to schools you will only take into serious consideration. If you have decent grades/DAT...you really won't have a problem getting into a couple schools of your choice. I applied to 10 schools with the "better safe than sorry" mentality, but once all the secondaries starting coming around asking for money - I only ended up sending in 4. Then I only chose to go to 2 of the interviews I was offered (my top 2 choices) and ended up getting into both. I wish I had just chosen to apply to schools I would seriously go to since out of those 10 schools I initially applied to, only 3 were in CA (and I wanted to stay in CA).

However, if you really are borderline or concerned, the amount you spend on applying really is not that big of a deal if it ends up helping you. You only end up regretting wasting that money applying to all those schools once you get in!🙂

I had 3 or 4 Ws. and a DAT of 18s in every section except math and gen. chem which I got 17s. So basically I have a 3.0 GPA and 18/18 DAT. I plan to finish my online application within the next two days. Ive cut my schools down to 15, but I don't feel that applying to less than 10 is an option for me, considering my stats will not exactly rock the admissions committee's world.
I think I would be lucky If I got secondaries from even 5 schools.

savy, I bet that you'll get all secondaries. About acceptances and interviews, I suggest that u retake the DAT and bring it up to the 20's level. That will guarantee interviews and acceptances.

I know the application process is such a pain, but if you go to Kaplan.com website, they have a nice timeline that will help you out in the dental application process. Good luck!
