I was planning on "scribing" in a free clinic on a volunteer basis and was wondering if anyone else has done this? I put scribing in quotations since it is not a typical paid scribing job in the ED. I would be going into the patients rooms with the doctor and entering records into the EHR.

Yeah that would be scribing and will be looked upon pretty favorably seeing as it is a volunteer gig and you get to work with under-served communities.

I have done it for a year now. Great experience.

Ok thanks, I have just heard that scribing in a clinic and not ED may not be looked upon as favorably. Not sure if it's true or not.

One thing that I found in our clinic is that I get to know the patients as well. They know me and are comfortable being around me. It has helped me see some of the pitfalls of having no health insurance from a long-term perspective. We still get some emergencies, but I also get to see treatment of chronic conditions. I actually get feedback on how good my SOAP notes are.
