So I found a free clinic through this website (http://www.freeclinics.us/) that I might volunteer in. Do you think I would need to sign HIPPA here and go through tb testing or just start volunteering right away? How is the process like usually in free health clinics?

Varies by clinic. HIPAA forms would likely be required as part of the application but not always. Regardless, you MUST comply w/ HIPAA. As for TB...maybe. It really varies a lot w/ free clinics b/c of their unique needs and budgetary limitations.

I have volunteered in two and started immediately. No paper work, no tests. The clinics are somewhat informal (makeshift examine rooms in the basement of a church), but make for great interactions with the patients.

I get to do all the vitals, interviews and shadow. It's a good gig. Makes me wonder why anyone would volunteer at a hospital.

Basically it depends on the clinic AND what you are going to be doing.

I have been volunteering at a clinic for about 7 years now and I have never signed a HIPPA form. Sure it is understood that you must still comply with all the protocols that protect patient confidentiality it is not necessary in all cases to sign forms to make it official.

I would just contact the clinic and go from there. It is a great experience because you get to experience medicine in its most noble form. And not to mention it will definitely help you out during the application process.
