Free LECOM D.O> Letter
Started by TriagePreMed
The LECOM representative told me today that if you apply to LECOM without a DO letter, they will have a D.O. spend a few hours with you before your interview to explain Osteopathic Medicine and he or she will write a letter on the spot. So if you don't have a letter and want to apply, LECOM helps you out.
LOL wow, that's insane! Very kind of them to do it... but still strange.

that sounds like a school desperate for students. why does that seem so sketchy. i am not saying its not cool for people who want to apply there, just seems sketchy.

Just curious, will the letter only be used by LECOM or will they allow the students to use it for other schools?
prob specific to lecom most likely
Seems to me that if it were just a ploy to fill seats they would remove the requirement of having a LOR from a DO all together.

They should just get rid of the letter requirement altogether.
I don't see this anywhere on their website. I would have applied if I knew this were true!
They should just name it..... the Ferretti school?

For those of you wondering, I'm not troll posting. You can contact LECOM yourself. The assistant dean gave me his card:
Ronald Berezniak, Ph.D., FAODME
Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs

I don't know. I don't think so.
I think they'd rather have an otherwise good candidate enter than lose him/her. It also serves as an "extra" interview for them.
Forgive my ignorance. What is "troll posting"

"A troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off- topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion...." cited from wikipedia.

There used to be an SDN member named "AndIwasLike" a few months ago. Look up his posts, and you'll see trolling in action.

i suppose that makes sense. just sounds weird on the surface.
Hahaha...that guy is ridiculous! Thanks for the reference. I have a firm grasp of what "trolling" is now
TriagePreMed is right.
LECOM will do that, although it makes the DO letter requirement seem like simply a formality. Hoop, I will jump through you now
I highly doubt you can use LECOM's letter at other DO schools though. It might be kinda tricky to get the letter writer to mail copies to other schools and/or upload a copy to your Interfolio account. 😳

LECOM seems to be one of the better D.O. schools out there. The "desperate for students" explanation doesn't make sense.

100% COMLEX pass rate with the cheapest tuition for OOS students does make it one of the best schools out there.
Can't argue with that. Say what you will about the school...those are the numbers that weigh the heaviest in my opinion.

How much filtering do they do on who takes the COMLEX?
The only way you get a 100% pass rate is if you control who takes the exam.
Doesn't mean they are not an excellent school; but not a very convincing statistic IMHO given that it is almost assuredly manipulated.

Then I hope they manipulate me into passing the COMLEX when the time comes.

Yes they control who and who can't take the exam. You have to take a practice exam that they administer in order to be allowed to sit for the real one. I don't see a problem with this. I think it's a little bit of padding the numbers, but who wouldn't want support from the school in passing the exam? Really, 100% vs 98% vs 95% of passing the exam...... i'm pretty sure none of us would bat an eye at anything above 90%.
It's totally true, I did it personally. The D.O. that did it for me seemed a little peeved that I hadn't gotten one or had much exposure to Osteopathic Medicine, so I doubt he wrote me a good letter. I've already been accepted somewhere else though so I'm not gonna cry about it.
All 3 (Seton Hill) will do this.
oh thank god. I've been desperately stalking do s in my area for a letter the last three months. They just keep handing out cards, and referring me to their secretaries. Then I never hear back from them.
This was at Bradenton but I think they all do it.

Why do they do it? Do they not care that students know nothing about osteopathy when they apply?

More like they want to ENSURE that their students know about osteopathy. Some DO schools don't require a D.O. letter and those students may not even have experience with osteopathy whatsoever. At least this way, LECOM can ensure that the student has either 1) had experience with a DO 2) or talked to their own advisor about osteopathy (to get a DO letter) which can also act like a second interview.
