One of the big things that I read about are people complaining about not having enough time for social lives, how they spend so much time studying, and how they get no sleep. I feel like this is a huge problem and will really start to wear on your health as time goes on.
Now I'm not the busiest guy in the world but i'm busier than a lot of people and I still have plenty of time. I take 18 hours every semester, do 4 events in track (each with seperate practices), take piano lessons, SGA, shadow drs, independent research, clubs, am a math major, take lots of extra science classes, study for the Putnam exam, and have just started studying for the MCAT. Even with all this stuff on my plate I'm still getting around 6 hours of sleep a night and have some free time each day as well to read or do whatever I want and I keep a 4.00 with 120+ hours so far. Granted some of you may go to more "difficult" schools than I do but you can still make time.
The only reason I am even writing about this is because most of you are going to get burned out before you even finish medical school if you continue at this pace. Medical school is going to be largely about time management and studying smart, not hard. Most of you need to eliminate your random hours that are wasted, such as the hours you spend on this forum, or facebook, or in front of the TV. Take books to the gym with you, it will kill two birds with one stone, and also give you extra energy so that you will feel better throughout the day.
I know most of you have heard this a 1000 times but I really feel like you need to hear it from someone who legitly has a lot of things to juggle. And some of you may think this is stupid to even be told but maybe it will help a few of you. I want the best competition when I get to medical school and the only way that will happen is if you guys take care of yourselves.
