So I figured I'd give this forum some love instead of posting this in the lounge (aren't I such a good little poster 🙂) Anyway, my HDD has been filling up and just today I saw that it only has 7 GB left out of a 100 GB HD. Aside from transferring over my pron (which accounts for about 20GB, don't yell at me, it's just my nature 😉) to my external hard drive, what are some other ways to free up the remaining Gigabytes? It seems to me that I should have much more free space than I actually do.

First of all, are you on a notebook or desktop computer. Either way, if you know what you are doing you should buy a larger HDD. That's a simple way to increase your speed and storage space. If you are not very good with technology I suggest that you just go through and search your files by size. Do you have a lot of games on there that you don't play? Delete some. You have the original CD/DVD if you ever want to play it again.

(We need your specs and programs you use to make any kind of judgment).

Sorry, I've got a Lenovo laptop. I don't play any games and I use the computer mostly for writing papers for classes. I've got some music on there too, but nothing substantial. The main programs I use are powerpoint, word, firefox, and I have AVG antivirus and spybot running in the background. Oh ya, my OS is vista. I've good with technological stuffs (a lot better than my command of the English language obviously 😉) Anyway, I've got two external hard drives that I can transfer stuff to, but that would only free up about 25 GB's. There's still ~70 GB's missing.

Well you are going to lose about 6 GB of the drive to formatting. Then you have all your eye candy with Vista you can't remove. I'm not sure if you can reinstall and remove languages/drivers you don't use. Other than that, Go to your search function and sort by size. You will see the files that take up the most space. I'm sure there are some freeware programs that will search for the gig files/folders for you.

If this is a newer notebook computer you could put a new drive in there if you know what you are doing/it won't void the warranty.

Oh ya, my OS is vista.

Problem found...switch to Windows XP Pro or Windows 2000 if you are a windows fan or just convert to Linux, like Red Hat, great and user friendly

No, but seriously, you need to move all of the pron and music over to the externals, if you use itunes, you can run your music off of an external HDD, thats what I do and I use pandora.com while I am away from home (awesome site). Then you can run windows clean clean-up and disk defrag and that should help a lot!
