so it's starting to get cold and I wear appropriate clothes (compared to the people around me) and when Im at home or in a coffee shop studying, places where the avg. temp is like 68-70 degrees, I feel like a friekin snowman.. my core body temp drops like 10 degrees, I swear. My fingers get white, I'm wearing a coat with fleece lining, shivering!!!

How do I stay warm while I'm study.... the only thing that feels warm on my entire body are my armpits... i'm tempted to stick my hands there!!!

:scared: (this is me being FREEEEEEZING right now!!!!!!!!!!!)

wool socks!!!! thermal undershirt!!!! hot cider/tea/coffee/soda!!!!!

If you want to stay warm, work out!

I found that I am no longer cold all the time after I got back into my workout regiment. I go outside with a hoody on and I start to sweat. The exercise improves your circulation and thus heat transfer to extremities.

I may be completely wrong about this but I no longer get cold. (Rather I just really warm.)

thats interesting, maybe i'll try it out.... i'm going to the gym tonight..

ps.. still cold.. and yes never leaving california...

i end up sitting on my hands because i'm always so cold. it looks weird, but then again, wearing gloves indoors does too.

another idea!! go to an REI/Gander Mountain/outdoorsy type store and see if they have instant hot packs...either the first aid kind or just the handwarming kind. Stick 'em in your shirt, shoes, pants, or in your armpits and you'll heat up nice and fast.

I'm only moderately kidding about that one. Also try bouncing your legs up and down like a spaz.

Generally what I do though is rock back and forth with my arms wrapped around me. I tend to look like a mental patient but I can't honestly say I care. It comforts me. And makes the voices go away.

Rather than offer advice on how to stay warm, I would rather be the first to list a possible medical condition that could lead to cold intolerance like you describe. I offer up to the masses: hypothyroidism.

Freak.

I'll add bilateral hypothalamic nucleus lesion. But only if you also can't handle heat.

That's sort of odd. Maybe it would help if you got up and walked around every 30 minutes or hour or so. Also, you could wear gloves. Yeah, it might look weird, but whatever.

I'll add magnesium deficiency. especially if you get a lot of headaches. (per my neurology attending/headache specialist, being cold all the time is a sign of magnesium deficiency, and having headaches makes you pee out magnesium)

Try head on, Apply it directly to your forhead!

good sex is the best remedy!...endorphins rushing through your blood will provide your daily cold resisting needs..yup

I am always freezing too! I have one of those bags you put in the microwave and I study with it on my lap (it was the best gift ever- they even make slippers that you can put in the microwave!). I also make a pot of green tea and wear my robe (in the house) over my clothes.
just be happy you aren't in ALBANY!+pity+
stay warm!

Really? Is it getting cold in CALIFORNIA? It is going to be 13 degrees here on saturday night.

and having headaches makes you pee out magnesium)

I'd be interested to hear the physiology behind that one.

A heating pad or instant hot pack placed on your back over your kidneys is a great way to get toasty. With 22% of your cardiac output going through the kidneys, it feels like a big warm hug for your whole body when you have them insulated.

If your hands are cold, likely you're not wearing a hat. Wool hat with a hood over it = warm.

(and it was -25F last week, so I know what I'm talking about)

Working out is the best way to stay healthy and warm. No need to do any hardcore stuff. Just get on a ellipse machine 20-30 minutes every other day or daily if you have time. Even better is to do high intensity interval training. It will increase your metabolism as well.

You will sleep better at night too.

I recommend Synthroid

Get an apartment with free heat. I keep mine at 77-78 degrees all winter long. Otherwise I freeze my butt off.

Also, at coffee shops, sit next to the fireplace if there is one.

Down 10 shots of Jack Daniels and you'll be good to go.

That's how I used to keep myself warm when I was working in a lab with a poor heating system. Only it was jagermeister, because the post-doc I was working with preferred it to JD. Both will keep you warm and happy, which is more than I can say for any of these silly heating packs shoved down your pants.

68-70 degrees? That's like shorts and T-shirts temperature!! My goodness, it's easy to spot a Californian!

I have the same problem with the hands and feet... they do not make socks thick enough for me. I've tried the hot packs in my shoes and whatall, but if you're already sitting in the library freezing, try running to the bathroom and running your wrists under hot water for a few minutes. If your library allows, hot coffee is good-both for the instant warming action and for the increased BP-I find it really makes a difference in those extremities (my BP is kind of low to start with though).

Aerobic exercise actually works well for me as I am perpetually cold (on-call, in the library, and in my office). My genes are from Ocho Rios, Jamaica. I keep a couple of sweatshirts handy and I am often found reading under the "french fry llights" that I borrow from the Trauma ICU when I am cold on call. The cleaning ladies always leave an extra comforter for me too.

When I work out, I DO stay generally warmer but if I find myself in a older building where there are blowers, I get chilled pretty easily. (Fortunately most of our hospital and attached medical school/library are fairly new). Once the lights get on in the OR, I am toasty while wearing an undershirt, wool socks, scrubs and a heavy gown standing next to the patient who is under a Bair Hugger. It's nice then. 👍 Probably the main reason why I went into Surgery

hahahaha, your landlord must hate you. That heating bill must be outrageous. I get uncomfortable about 72, and at my last house, we kept it around 66, and our heat bill was still $260 in January, for just the second floor of a house. Now the wifey and I keep it around 70-71. I like to wear pants and shoes all the time, so I'm comfortable. I'd have to be naked at 78.

68 is not cold. I don't even start wearing sweatshirts or like weight until it hits 60, and no winter coats until it is 50 or below. People in warmer climates have it made!!! If I ever move to one I'll probably feel like I'm roasting all the time...even in winter.

I remember a couple of years ago I went to Fla to see my grandparents at Christmas and most everyone there looked at me like I was nuts for wearing shorts and tanktops!! What they don't realize is that I came from sub-zero MI to 70 degree!

Our house last year was at 68 all the time, however with the new little one we keep it at 72 and I walk around the house in scrub pants and tanktops still.

p.s. I don't have a thyroid and am on full replacement therapy. I guess growing up in MI has it's benefits for cold tolerance.

funny!!! That commercial makes me want to jump off a bridge every time i hear it.. i kinda get a new HA when i hear that dumb lady say "apply directly to the forehead"... 20 times in a row!!

The ironic thing is that my ideal temp would be 85, but I'm from the Minneapolis area.

Yet, I will continue to wear sandals in the winter. 😕

Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Escape from this winter crap for residency?

EXTREMELY tempting. If only my family wasn't concentrated in a 45-mile radius. But they would be happy to have a vacation spot via me.

I have the same problem. My wife's fam all lives in Appleton and is great at playing the guilt card when she mentions wanting to move somewhere a bit more tropical. I really need to do a better job of educating her on the wonders of modern air travel. 😉

yeah, so you can go ANYWHERE and the AC is down to like 55? I was colder when I was visting florida cuz of the AC. Have to bring a sweater everywhere!

Sadly, it's cold everywhere. If it's not the weather then some fool pushes the AC down to 50. I can never go anywhere without my sweater--GRRRRR. :meanie: Come on people, lets keep it at 75. Anything below 70 is uncomfortable, but then again I'm from California.

Yeah I have a sweatshirt on everyday in New Orleans because they pump my school full of the AC. Its the worst in the cadaver lab, one girl even started wearing a winter hat, lol. At least we can usually go outside and warm up when we start turning into medstudentpopsicles. To the OP I totally feel you on freezing your tush off at 68 degrees. My hubby and I actually argue about our AC because I like it at 74 and he wants it to be 70, we compromise at 72 but I think that is way to cold, brrrr. However, when our short winter blast rolls around, I won't pay to keep my house above 68 because it feels ridiculous to have a high energy bill in the winter in New Orleans, so we just bundle up. Socks and a hat are definitely key, get some wool socks or a winter hat with a nice sweater or sweatshirt and you'll be toasty.

Seriously, I have no idea. They keep the library and some of the lecture halls here at about 55/60 degrees (no $hit) So, it's like 90F outside and you get all sweaty walking to class, then you go inside and it's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey inside. I have on right now shorts, tank top, longsleeved t shirt, flannel pants and a hoodie and wool socks and I'm freezing my ass off. Why must you torture me Dr McG? why? Do the books complain of being too hot?
