Star Alliance can be quite good if Europe is your destination of choice. They are aligned with United, SAS, Lufthansa, Air Canada, as well as a number of smaller European airlines, e.g., the Austrian airline (Tyrolean?). The combination of the larger carriers and the smaller allows you the flexibility hit many different European destinations from different hubs--an important consideration when trying to devise your final itinerary.
