In a lot of secondary questions (especially "Why School X?" questions) I want to mention my interest in research and how that school has great research resources. However, will this raise questions in a committee's mind as to why I'm not applying MD/PhD and make them think that I'm just trying to pander to what they want to hear?

My interest in research and academic medicine is genuine but I would prefer to focus on clinical medicine while incorporating research on the side. This is why I didn't apply MD/PhD. Is this a legitimate career path if write about my interest in research?

What kinds of schools are you applying to? Many of the research powerhouses are interested in MD-only apps with research narratives, in fact some even ask about how their required scholarly projects appeal to you as part of the education there. If the school is service oriented and not big on research you might not have as much success this way, but pretty much all the schools with MSTP programs are big on research in general, even for their MDs.

Ok, that's good to hear. I am applying to a lot of the research powerhouses as well as some service oriented schools but I am heavily involved in both so I should be fine in that regard. Do you think I should cite specific programs that the school has that incorporate research even if they don't ask about it. For example, Cornell's MD with Honors in Research Program? I am planning on talking about how that program appeals to me and how to the research centers and mentors affiliated with that program are what's drawing me in.

Yup that's a good "why our school" talking point!
