Hey folks,

Long time browser first time poster. Just took the test in May. Got my scores back less than an hour ago.

10VR 9PS 08BS R-wr: 27R

Cum GPA: 3.59
Sci GPA: ~3.0

California Resident

I do come from a disadvantaged childhood but am not a URM.

Academics: I am a philosophy major with a minor in chemistry. I will be graduating with honors next summer. I have written an undergraduate thesis on a brief history of medical ethics. And I have original research experience in an orgo lab- (1 semester)

ECs:
Research
I have been doing clinical research in an ED for the past three years. I am currently the head of the program in terms of student hierarchy. I train all the newer entrants and give them talks on professionalism/research/procedures. I have been the head of the program for 1.5 years now. Alongside this I have done independent research with two physicians (1 DO resident and MD faculty) and our abstract just got published (co-authored). The research has been presented by me at a research symposium.

Helping the needy

For the past year I have been working with an international organization which helps fund the building of hospitals in poverty stricken countries. I have helped with fundraisers mainly. I've helped raise 90k.

I have tutored kids on campus who have physical disabilities like visual and hearing impairments (1 year). As well as those who get distracted easily. I have also tutored disadvantaged youth (initially as a volunteer then moved to a paid position because they loved me so much). (2 years + ongoing).

Shadowing
While doing research at the local ED mentioned above I also have the opportunity to follow around physicians and watch them do procedures. I have been in rooms with cardiac arrest patients down to constipated patients. I have spent the better part of 3 years in this ED watching and observing to my hearts content.

So what do you think folks?

Why is your science GPA low? Interesting ECs for sure.

The only excuse I have is doing too much at once??? I thought I was the ish then got spanked a few times. I have continuously taken 18-21 units a semester for most of my undergrad career. IDK dude.

The ECs inspire me every day. Anytime I have had my doubts about going pre-med all I need to do is walk into that ED and see a physician save someone's life and I'm reinvigorated.

So, the grades are consistently Bs and Cs? Any upward or downward trend to speak of?

Maybe a slight upward trend but nothing spectacular. Aside from the science courses I have almost a 4.0. Mostly B's for science courses 2 A's and only 1 C. The math classes I got all A's (Calc and Stats) if that means anything.

If you're above 3.0, then I'd concentrate on DO schools. Are you open to DO? If you don't get in, you'll need to do some post-bacc coursework to get that GPA headed the right direction. The adcoms need to know that you can do well (mostly As with a few Bs) with the sciences, for obvious reasons. If you do end up doing post-bacc stuff, you need all As.

Not sure how much the disadvantaged thing will help...I really have no idea to be honest.

I'm willing to wait and go DO the second time around. All I need is an interview and I feel fairly confident things will go well from there. Thanks for the advice though. Hopefully my ECs/PS will save my ass when it comes down to it.
