Hey guys i start college in a couple of months and i was wondering if anyone could tell me what classes they took their freshman year that they think helped them prepare for med school.

soulwater, don't stress. The reason I'm telling you this is because you'll be greatly helped in picking freshmen classes.

I'm assuming you haven't attended an orientation session yet at your new university. At these sessions, besides getting to meet people you'll also attend informational sessions. One of these sessions will [probably] have to do with advising, both professional and faculty.

You may not get to meet your advisor just then, but you will more than likely have some presentation on class scheduling in which the advising department will explain the process to you. You should then be able to pick your own classes, with help, or have classes assigned to you.

At my university students put down their time preference (morning, afternoon, or night) and classes are automatically assigned. This is one way that scheduling is accomplished but there are other ways.

If you're a science major, you can probably expect (without any AP credit) to take biology and chemistry your first two semesters with math and english requirements thrown in. For example, my first semester I took biology, chemistry, pre-calc, and English lit. Second semester I took those courses, except English comp, in addition to sociology.

Don't get worried just yet, you'll have a lot of help in the first semester and even before the semester starts.

Thanks, you don't know how much better that makes me feel, not even in college yet and i am stressing,,i just don't want to mess up. Hopefully the orientation will clear things up. thanks again.

Gen Bio 1 + Lab , Gen Chem 1 + Lab, English, and one more elective

that'll be good for u. If u AP credits for either of the science, U can take a higher level of that science or Physics 1. If u AP credits for English, take another elective or a math class in that spot.

Good luck.

soulwater, what college will you attend? someone here may be able to help you specifically, because differnet colleges and different majors vary in what classes to take.

but in general advice, don't overstress about classes to early. you have 4 years to complete all your classes, and as long as you make progress each semester, you'll make it through. Orientation, advising, and other students will help you along with this process.

Also, don't worry about classes that prepares you for med school - preparing for medical school will come much later on. 1st worry is getting into medical school, and you're way ahead of most premeds by visiting SDN. spend some time around the forums, learn what you need to do.

The typical premed's first semester includes General chemistry, and one or two of : general bio, math, or english, depending on your school and major.

bio + lab (5), chem + lab (4), calc (4), bioethics/philosophy (3).

looking back, i wish i took more freshman courses/seminars. those are typically easier courses but still pretty interesting. they would have allowed me to be more proactive with EC's.

then again.. not sure which class i would have dropped to replace with a seminar. i liked my courses...

If you haven't discovered it already, rate my professor can save you a lot of stress. 😉

This is bad advice. The OP doesn't know where or if he'll apply. Why limit him to schools that accept AP credit?

As a prospective medical student, DO NOT take AP credit for any sciences.

i took Organic+lab (4), gen bio+lab (4), calc II (4), intro to chem research methods BS class (1), and first year seminar (3), which is a 20-person class of people who lived on my floor, etc. It was basically supposed to introduce you to college level work and reading and all that, but for me it was an easy A with minimal work. That's just a special thing we have to do at my school.

Like Bacchus said, though, you'll probably have a ton of advising. We had an initial meeting with an advisor, then signed up for classes during our summer orientation. You could change afterwards though.

oh, and for the record, I go to a mid-sized liberal arts college...

Lol... atleast read what I said.. I said if u have AP credits.. u can take a higher level blah blah (meaning higher level class than what I suggested..) (I forgot "have" after "u" in the sentences, but that's not so hard to figure out)

You're implying he shouldn't take biology or chemistry if he has AP credits. This is bad advice. Too many schools either require the coursework or have different stances on AP credit. It'd be a disservice for him to take the AP credit and then find out later on down the road his dream school doesn't accept AP credit.

I am not telling him to either take them or not. If he decides to take them, I suggested the deviation to my class list...
