My first year of college I just didn't study at all and got a couple D's in elective classes and a C in a math class. I am ever so regretful now. For the past year I've been getting A's in every class. If I have a 4.0 gpa by the time I graduate and in all my sciences and maths, will my freshman year hurt me transcipt-wise? My advisor seems to think that I will be okay but has anyone else needed freshman forgiveness and got acceptances? Thank you.

If theres a strong upward trend then you definitely have a shot at med school

How will you get a 4.0 with two D's and a C?
To complete my univeristy's pre-med curriculum, I need over 124 credit hours. I'm a sophmore and am just now completing my pre-reqs and have managed to recover my gpa to a 3.4, so by the time my biology and chemistry courses are completed, my gpa will be a 4.0. It's not that I'm questioning my capabilities of achieving good grades, I was just lazy my first year and now I'm worried how much that will affect things in the long run. My freshman year was all pre-reqs and electives, next semester I will be starting my core sciences.

I think what you are trying to say here is, all your course grades added after freshman year will be 4.0. You cannot get "4.0" with what you had in freshman year. The only way you can do that if you are applying to DO schools, re-take those courses, and get A's.

What's really important for your case is to ensure high GPA trend and high MCAT. With those two factors, you will get in somewhere.

your sGPA and cGPA will never be a 4.0 at least for MD, maybe for DO since theres grade replacement,

like i said before get straight A's (and by that i mean majority A's and some B's here or there)from now on and you should be fine, dont sweat it too much.

I didn't know they do that, that's nice.

I pretty much partied full time my first year (both semesters) and did horribly (2.0). I also didnt know that i wanted to go to medical school then. After my first year, I started getting good grades, got on top of everything else and although I graduated with a low cGPA (3.3) my sGPA was a 3.8 and for the last 3 years I had almost all As. I actually used my massive partying experience to my advantage, because I made it look as it had made me a more "rounded" person. I applied to 18 schools, interviewed at 10, and got accepted to 5. Just make sure you apply early, have all the standard ECs, have a pretty good PS, as well as solid LORs, make a wise school selection, have a decent MCAT and do well in the interview. This is all within your reach, your bad grades are a thing of the past and you cant do anything about them.

I don't think that's the motivation.

Since allo and osteo schools get your transcripts, they can see classes that were retaken. They can decide for themselves what view to have of the applicant concerning the retake specifically and an applicant's academic record in general. How the GPA computation is made really doesn't matter.

I think the DO practice is done to make their publicly disclosed student stats look better.
