Hello,

This is the best story I have heard in my life. My friend called me today early in the morning and told me that he had been accepted to a medical school in New York (NYU). I was really happy for him. What strikes me is his stats: 3.5 and 16 on MCAT. I think he got accepted because both of his parents passed away at an early age and he had to survive on his own until today. He works at minimum wage. He is currently in the process of discovering possible antibiotics from the ocean's coral reefs to patent into the medical literature. I want to let all you students know that it is not only the stats that matter in admissions, they actually look at the whole person. I am really happy for him. Again congratulations to my friend, John.

If he really got in with a 16, that is sad. He never should have been let in with that score. Avg score yes, fine let him in. BUT a 16.

im calling bs on this. did you mean to say 26? a 26 sounds reasonable with his special circumstances. 16 is not believable, though.

Exactly how URM is he? I'm guessing pure-blood Eskimo.

I don't think NYU started giving out acceptances. A troll...

I think that we all know that doing well on the MCAT requires lots of preparation. It only reflects intelligence and/or aptitude in the medical arena to the extent that you've had the chance to prepare well for it. If you're working to support yourself and to put yourself through school, you may not have this luxury to the same degree that others do. I think think that it's a heartening story. If someone can take care of themselves under those difficult circumstances, I would think that they'd have some pretty impressive skills that would help in providing good patient care.

I've heard of someone at HMS with a 22, so never say never...

If you just take the premed prerequisites ( and get a 3.5 no less), you should be able to fart a 20 on the MCAT without even studying.

Can't you get a 16 just by eliminating one obvious wrong answer on half the questions and then randomly guessing?

I agree. If this is really true, it's a pretty amazing story....involved a really tough break and he was someone who overcame horrible hardships and really excelled.

i also did not know NYU started handing out acceptances yet. He had to be an April MCATer and why would he not retake in August? And if he did, he would not have been accepted yet.

yeah, i would have believed this but the 16 makes it an obvious troll....I realize that given his circumstances he might not have had a lot of time to prepare, and he certainly didn't take a prep class....but a 16? Plenty of people can get well above a 16 on their first practice exam, taking it cold--zero prep.

a 16? come on...the BEST looking breakdown for that is a 5 5 6...no way you make it...

sorry to sound like a total loser, but what is a "troll?" as used in teh context of this forum. and btw velocypedalist is an awesome name

nevermind, i just got it from another post basically asking the same thing *Duh* sorries

thanks, I thought so!

a troll is someone who posts a capricious, inflammatory post just to get a reaction out of people.

In short, he made this up and he's laughing at all the sincere responces he's getting.

At Kaplan, they fed my answers through a wrong test. So when I got a score report back, I received a total score of 14. So if my random guessing skill got me a 14, I don't have much respect for someone with a 16 even with hardship.

Um, I hate to say this, but I actually *know* someone who took the MCAT three times.. yes THREE TIMES... and got a 14, 14, 15. Those are TOTAL SCORES for each time. She still thinks she wants to go to med school.....

Even if this whole story is true, I'll be concerned about this person SURVIVING Med School. MCAT does to some extent predicts how you'll do in the preclinical years. Getting in is one thing, surviving is another thing. Compared to Undergrad, Med school goes through much more material in shorter amount of time.

Dude, how do you like UCLA? Are you glad that you ended up going to UCLA instead of Columbia? 🙂

yeah man hows UCLA treating you? couldve been with you.. if only for two years. *sigh* what a loss

whats that saying..

if it sounds too good to be true its proally....

a steaming pile of horse****?

The word troll comes from fishing....not the Smurfs, btw. While fishing you just throw your ridiculous bait into the water and hope some unsuspecting ******* fish bites and is thus realed in for the kill. Same goes for the internet. You throw out some ridiculous mcat score and hope people bite and create some long thread about a mindless and clearly impossible scenario while the op sits back and lets the rod holder do all the work.

They didn't. NYU starts giving out acceptances in mid-dec. Troll alert! Troll alert! Nice story though. Sort of.

Survived on his own huh? No social service or foster care? He just lived in the trash can? The medical school he actually got into was B.S. Med.
