One of my friends took the DAT a day ago and was caught cheating! I had no idea he was even planning nor even thinking about cheating on the DAT. He left his phone in the bathroom trash can of the testing center and would leave to use the restroom during the test. And with his phone he would look up answers. I guess after like 3 times of doing this the test proctor got suspicious and busted him. Who the heck wouldn't get suspicious?! haha The DAT is a timed test and there is no time to keep getting up to use the restroom in the middle of the test so the proctor probably thought that it was crazy this kid kept leaving to use the restroom.
I have no idea what is going to happen to him and I'm not sure if he will be able to retake the DAT or not. Has there ever been a situation like this before? Does anyone know what happens? I'm still in shock and thought I should share this with everyone. DON'T CHEAT nor even think about it!

Wow, unbelievable. I am not exactly sure what happens, but I am quite sure his chances of getting into dental school are slim to none.

How was he even able to leave for the restroom in the first place? My proctors specifically told me I couldn't leave until my break started. Not to mention, I was padded up and down by hand and with a metal detector. Even if you wanted to cheat, it was close to impossible at my testing site.

And you're right, being that it's a timed test, the time it takes to walk there and back to the restroom and get your phone and google search, you will be lucky to get one or two answers....doesn't seem like a good return on the investment with all the struggle you that comes a long with it.

Everything you just said I completely agree with and was thinking the same thing when I was told what happened.

Lmao. I had nightmares where I was too dumb to take the test and taped a phone to the bathroom stall door and looked up answers during the test. (No I didn't try this and would never cheat on a test. Especially one like the DAT) I can't believe someone actually tried something similar... I left on the break walked around, stretched and ate a lot of food (might explain why I still need to lose 2-3 lbs more to make my suit fit 😛) 😀.

This is so laughably dumb. For starters, it's amazingly inefficient, how many questions could he realistically cheat on with such a time eating method, let alone how obvious it is. Honestly, it's irrelevant that he got caught cheating on the DAT, because he's clearly too stupid to have scored well enough, and had he managed to luck out, he'd have never made it through dental school.

Lastly, the DAT is easy.

I agree with everything except the DAT is easy. While the material itself isn't hard, it is a lot to cover and a very stressful test. I'm assuming you (*edit:went) to UNC (which is a very rigorous school) so I'm pretty sure it might not be too hard for you lol

Yea I agree! This friend of mine is from school and we have taken a bunch of the same classes and he never did good lol. Don't worry he doesn't use SDN even after telling him how helpful it is.

ow was he even able to leave for the restroom in the first place? My proctors specifically told me I couldn't leave until my break started.

My testing center allowed candidates to use the restroom if needed during the exam. However, the proctor stated that they would report any testing abnormalities, including leaving for a restroom during test administration, to the ADA just so that they could be aware of everything.

it is a lot to cover and a very stressful test.

Yep, especially PAT. I wish they'd throw out that section. Spare future generations the pain.

Did they let him finish the test? What are they going to do with his test? Did they notify the schools he applied to or the ADEA?

He should probably start looking into another profession.

Ouch. I hope he gets a second chance. People make mistakes. If he is sincerely remorseful and demonstrates that over time with significant evidence of personal responsibility, I think that he should be allowed to reapply and be given a second chance.

I don't think he'll get a second chance... At my school people have been dismissed from the entire program for cheating. They take academic integrity very seriously.

I agree that it should be taken very seriously. But a permanent ban on the ability to apply to dental school seems too harsh to me.

I understand that the test is stressful, but I wouldn't want someone to be my dentist if they fold under pressure.
If I was running admissions, I wouldn't accept them into my program.

On the student side, it is kind of disrespectful to the rest of us who put in the time and effort to get the scores that we got.

People can change. They can improve. I agree that the cheater should be punished by not being allowed to apply this cycle or in the following few cycles.

But a permanent ban on entering dentistry is, in my opinion, too harsh a punishment for a first-time offense.

I like to give people second chances.

I agree that people deserve second chances. I wasn't necessarily saying I would never let him apply. I was saying I wouldn't allow him in if he applied today.

If he was able to prove himself over the next couple of years and retake the DAT then he might have a chance in the future (although it is going to be difficult trying to probe that you truly are sorry for your actions.

One other problem that they may run into is if they do really well on a future DAT, they may be suspicions of cheating again.

How is this different from academic dishonesty in school? That's an immediate red flag when adcom see it. I get people can change, but once you've lost that "trust", schools will question it even if he kills it on the DAT in the future. That's just my opinion though.

Apparently two kids in my first ochem exam had some kind of tap code going on... Thats pretty idiotically innefficient considering the abundance of resonance structure and the fact that we had 4 exam versions.

I have thought about this some more. I return to my original statement that I would not let them into my school.

No, it's easy.

If you go through dentistry, you'll take Part I and Part II, maybe ADAT, maybe CBSE, from there maybe Step 1-3 of medicine if you're a glutton for punishment and doing omfs. Every single test is a wealth of more information and considerably more stressful, the stress of the DAT is NOTHING compared to a licensure. Furthermore, the DAT is substantially easier than the MCAT or the PCAT.

It's an easy test. Period. Accept that and and you'll have more realistic expectations about the future.

and this guy (the cheater) is an idiot and should never be allowed in healthcare, as he is most certainly a danger to himself and to patients. The filter of thinking this was a good idea is alone telling enough. All ethics aside, it's also just the worst example of planned cheating I've ever seen actually utilized in a major test. This is middle school level cheating. My 3 year old nephew would come up with this gameplan.

I definitely will agree and say the DAT is NOT an easy test. Specifically because of the reasons you just stated. I don't care what anyone says. That same person that got a 22 or 23 on the exam could have easily gotten a 18/19 on another exam. They could throw anything at you and just a few wrong can bring your score to average. I was speaking with an oral surgeon resident today and he was even telling me he thought the DAT was a hard test.

I dont think someone who got a 22/23 would get an 18 on another test but they could get a 21. The difficulty is usually spread out enough so that if you really do know a lot you won't get under a 20/21 imo.

I thought the PCAT (from what I've seen anyways) was pretty similar to the DAT lol. Anyways, you're right the DAT pales in comparison to what we have to face in the future and I know that. It's simple a stepping stone we must all go through. Tests will get worse and I know and expect that. Again, I don't think it's super hard either but everyone has a different opinion. Lol, Ik that plan of his was incredibly dumb I have no words for it tbh.

Wow that's insane ! The time used on cheating could've been used to review for the DAT. That's just too much effort IMO.

Nice to know the proctors are actually paying attention.

Idk why you're so hell bent on saying the DAT is easy. I mean I supposed standardized tests generally aren't hard but I don't think the DAT is a joke. I've always been considered smart by most people; put in no effort in high school got over a 2100+ on SAT and 5s on APs and still didn't think the DAT was easy. Did you get a 28+ without studying or something? Everyone will have a different opinion about it and no one person is completely correct to be honest.

To the guy who said the DAT is easy, lol your cute bro. Don't come on here and insult the efforts of others. Yes by saying that, your insulting the efforts of others. Yes, it may be easier when compared to examinations in dental school, but that's the point. Whoever sits for the DAT is not in dental school yet, and at that stage in his/her education, the exam is very difficult, requiring months of studying. Go be an Einstein somewhere else idiot.

Dang... I was rushing to finish when I was taking mine (I had a bit of spare time for science section), but still.. three freaking times? I would be mad if he didn't get caught after being THAT suspicious. My proctors were so strict, I almost suffocated.

This is why there needs to be new methods established to more accurately depict the type of dentist someone would make when admissions select students - rather than just an exam and quick interview. An arrogant applicant foreshadows an arrogant dentist, who ironically is supposed to be specialized in care-giving and compassion. So, I'd pipe down "UncUndergrad1", your true colors are showing.

Let it go bro :zip:

the dat is not easy, no matter which way you put it. also, while each exam is different, it must be stressed that each one is scaled accordingly so the scores are as fair as possible. In the end it comes down to how well you prepared for it. I studied my teeth out for a 23AA, i did not spend 3 months studying everyday for an easy exam or else i would have studied for like a week.

yeah the dat feels "easier" when you have bootcamp and destroyer. Lets face it, no matter how smart you are, 95% of predents on SDN would be toast without bootcamp or dat destroyer; im one of them for sure.
