Hey SDN,

A friend and I have the same major (so we took the same classes) and have the same major EC's -- similar hours for shadowing, volunteering (nonclinical and clinical), research for around the same amount of time, and we were both co-presidents of a club together. He has the higher sGPA and cGPA. We're both applying this cycle, and I was wondering if I'm being neurotic in wondering if adcoms would always choose one over the other since the apps overlap but one has a higher GPA. Looking at past threads, people have said that adcoms try to build a class according to their mission; would they pick up two people with such similar apps?

Thank you in advance!

I don't think you should worry about it. There will be schools who rank you above your friend based on other factors like mission or IS vs. OOS.

To answer your other question, I went to a second look event and there were two people accepted from the same school!

It's not a zero sum game. You would NOT be interviewing for the same seat.

Take two of these:

Thank you everybody for your responses! I really appreciate the help!

I wouldn't worry about it. This is something beyond your control. All you can do is worry about how you plan to get into medical school. Who knows? Maybe you two can talk about how you worked together in your interviews? Showing how you're focused on collaboration with them rather than competing against them shows maturity. They're your friend. There's no reason to treat this like a dog-eat-dog competition. You might both get in. You never know.
