I am now in a fine pathology residency with a group of wonderful, supportive physicians and staff, but, in spite of everything, feel daily that dermatology is more in line with my interests. Can anyone tell me the possibility of getting into derm, and/or the necessary steps I would take to acquire a derm residency after completion of pathology? My step scores were 200 and 215, respectively, with two retakes on step 2, both obviously less than a glowing tribute to my record, but acquired during a period which is now behind me. 😕
From what I've already read on this site, I know that there are some of you out there who have these answers, and I would truly appreciate your sharing this info with me. Thanks.

I'll assume you are not a troll. Considering stellar applicants have trouble getting into derm, your chances of getting into derm with low board scores are low. Your only chance to get into derm is if you have STRONG connections or if you are willing to sacrifice years and years of your life doing research for a chair at a residency program. Sorry to sounds so negative, but I am being realistic. I've seen smart ppl with years of research who still do not get into derm. I know of ppl who slave away at research only to find out they didn't match. Yes, it's that hard.

Anyways, good luck with whatever path you take.

Thanks so very much for the direct reply and the honesty. Negativity carries with it the aspect of mean-spiritedness, and there is nothing of that in your response. Things are what they are, (and what I thought they might be....)so it's time for an attitude adjustment and refocus. Again, thanks.

I've seen path residents who matched into dermpath and because of the connections formed during that fellowship, matched into the same program for dermatology. Admittedly, a circuitous way to reach your goal but nonetheless, still a possibility.

Wow, these folks must have been really determined. It must be super difficult to be a clinical intern after spending 5 years away from patients.
