i have to get from gw to georgetown. is there a shuttle/public transportation/inexpensive way i could go.

i hear a taxi between gw and georgetown would cost 20 though it's a less than 5 minute ride!

i don't know exactly, but here's a rough route using subway.

right when u exit gw's hospital, go underground and u'll hit the subway. ask instricutions for how to hit metro point/center circle (i forgot the name) which is the main subway stop before georgetown. u might need one transfer. from there, walk up the long escalator stairs, head slightly left and walk to the other side of the street. if it's biz hours, there should be a georgetown shuttle that takes u to the medical school campus for like $1-2. subway ride will also take like $1-2. entire trip might take 1hr. (this is really rough instructions).

From GU to GW by taxi is a TWO zone fare. For one person that is $6.90 (three zones if you are on the Western side of GU, which is only $8.40). Take the taxi or if it is a nice day and you don't have a lot... walk down M street and head towards Washington Circle. A walk should take you 30 minutes max. I often walk from the GW metro stop to Georgetown to shop. But a taxi will not be $20. Ask the driver first, how many zones. Good luck.

DON'T take the Metro from GW (Foggy Bottom) to Metro Center in order to get to Georgetown - you won't be anywhere near it! The closest Metro station to Georgetown is Rosslyn - across the bridge in Virginia and not convenient to the medical school at all.

There is a little blue shuttle bus that runs every 15 - 30 minutes from the Foggy Bottom Metro to various parts of Georgetown. You can see the map at http://www.georgetowndc.com/shuttle.php

If you get off the shuttle at Reservoir & Wisconsin, you'll still have several blocks to walk to get to the medical school, probably about 10 minutes.

It absolutely is not $20 for a taxi - as was pointed out, DC taxis run on a zone system. If you're taking a taxi to the medical school, it will be three zones.

I went to Georgetown for undergrad, and am at GWU SOM now, don't ever take taxis but have driven, taken Metro, and walked all over these places.
