From H to F in one exam: pep talk?

had a rough stretch of exams that left me exhausted and took off two days before another major test (actually I had no choice but to sleep) much to my detriment.

End result: a class I was surely honoring is now nothing more than a pass.

So are all my residency chances shot? I might only honor 2 of my 5 classes. I don't want to do family med. I have too much debt.

Seriously? Get a grip. It is the first few months of M1. No one cares. In fact, a lot of schools (mine included) are ONLY pass/fail.

If you'd tanked your Step 1, I'd be concerned. But if you've been around these forums (or anyone who isn't a first year), you'd know how much this doesn't matter.

AOA is different everywhere- but if you have honors in other classes, you still have a good shot. Not to mention these first few classes probably factor in at less than 10% of what will be considered for AOA with 1st, 2nd, 3rd (and 4th) year. Not to mention, AOA isn't required for any specialty. You can have all Pass in your preclinical years, rock Step 1, honor the important clinical rotations and you're good to go. Seriously.

Clinical grades and Step 1 are major. A few classes marked "Pass" in your MS1- not the end of your residency dreams or a path that leads to Family Medicine.

That's the beauty about squatting, you don't need a toilet!

If you want to do derm or plastics- you should probably start doing some kind of related research (pubs never hurt).

Also plan on destroying the Step 1. My two friends in plastics both scored >260 (you can be competitive with less than this, but super high helps). If you do this well, no one cares if you have all "Pass" your MS1 years.

So yeah- get back on track, get your stuff together, and remember this game is long. Step 1 and CLINICAL grades matter a lot. Throw in a pub or two and you're golden.

But if you are having trouble with the material- learn it, because you'll need it for the boards.

In all seriousness- please remind yourself that the first 3 months of med school are NOT going to determine your life (unless you fail stuff or get caught cheating/collecting child porn- see Vandy for more info)

Perspective-get some, it is important.
