FSU acceptances?

I was just wondering who has been accepted to FSU and who might end up going there. Figured i would get to know some of you since i will be headed to Tallahassee if Miami does not give me the welcome carpet by the beginning of May(classes start in mid-may). How many of you are thinking about attending other schools and possibly open up some slots? any of you out there that are waitlisted at FSU?

why are there official threads for other med schools, but not FSU---and dont tell me b/c it is unaccreditated. There are a many peps out there that would be content going to seminole country.

You are aware of FSU's ongoing accreditation problems aren't you? I'm not trying to slander them, but I think any student going there should be aware that they did NOT pass their first accreditation hearing. I have 2 close friends that may have to repeat the first year (at their expense) because the SCHOOL did not hold up their end of the bargain. I interviewed at FSU last year and I choose to go to UF because I didn't feel comfortable with laying down $100,000 to a school that could not garauntee me that they would have accreditation when I graduated. Glad I made my choice, because so far, my friends are paying dearly for theirs....

I will concede that FSU did appeal the decision to AMA, and I do NOT know the outcome of that decision...but you might want to find out for yourself. Personally, I'd rather wait a year and KNOW that the school I attend will be able to provide me with the means to be a LICENSED MD, rather than spend all the time/money just to find myself unable to secure a residency / license due to lack of accreditation.

if Miami does not give me the welcome carpet by the beginning of May(classes start in mid-may).

Miami starts classes in the beginning of August, therefore you got plenty of time to get accepted. :D

Since I'm trying to avoid writing, I'll give my opinion.

Not everyone is offered a seat at UF (evil commies) or other more competitive schools. If FSU is your only acceptance, take it. I have no doubt that they will be accreditied in the near future. When they do get accreditied, their degree will probably be worth more than a foreign degree.

Try getting out of this wreched state, though!

It's amazing how quickly my love turned to hate. :D

So in reality, UM or some other school has like 40 days or so to come through with an acceptance.

I'll echo SwampMan's sentiments. Go if it's the only place you've gotten in. Accredidation will happen. Funny thing about the florida schools and their accredidation. USF lost their accredidation for a while back in the 90's. I dunno what it is about this state. I hate these schools with a passion.

SwampMan, call Robyn and straight up ask her why you didn't get an invite this year! I wanna know!

I completely retract my comments. I was not aware that FSU started classes so early. Anyway, good luck, and I hope Blame gets into Miami well in advance of mid-May!

Cane, that's cool. i guess i should have been clearer in my post. what undergrad place did you go to?

any body got the balls enough to say that they are thinking about going to FSU?? come on people.. this might one day be our school
SPEAK UP AND BE PROUD...anyone?

Hey Blame,
I currently attend UM undergrad. Like yourself, I am also waiting impatiently for a possible UM acceptance. I interviewed back in October and was placed on the deferral list in December. So, I can definitely relate to your impatience and frustration.

cane,
i am sure you know more about the UM situation than myself. I wanted to know when do you expect them to start sending out acceptances. Do they send out deferrals for most who are interviewed? I was deferred last month. I guess that once you get deferred that the next letter you get is an acceptance...? or alt. list? what is the deal here? Seems like everyone i know is waiting to hear. Do you think they will start sending acceptances by the end of April? and how full is the class for 2002 as of now. Thanks a bunch
BIOTN

Blame,
I haven't heard squat from UM since they deferred me in December. Supposedly, they view your file in every subsequent meeting that they have, but I don't buy this. They have hardly interviewed anyone from UM undergrad (where's the loyalty? ), and everyone I know that did get interviewed got deferred. I really doubt that they are reviewing all of our files and then not making any decisions after that. I know of no one that has gotten in after they were deferred, so I believe that we are in fact on a waitlist. I know that they have had three admission committee meetings in total (one in December, January, and February), and they are supposed to have their final one at the end of March, in which they will fill up their class. I do not know if they will look at us deferrals at this meeting. If you are not accepted by this meeting, you will probably be placed on the official waitlist or rejected :( . I am expecting the official waitlist letter at the end of April or early May, because at this point they would have finished interviewing and ranking everyone. Have you called to see if the March meeting occurred and if so when did it occur? Do you know if they really looked at deferrals? Everytime I call they give me this line about them looking at everyone (yeah right).

cane,
i called down there last week and talked to agnus.
she said they had meet the night before which was the 19th and that she did not have the results yet. she said she would mail out results in a day or two. i assume the 21st. well then if it certified mail it takes a few more days. Well, i have yet to receive anything. guess they overlooked my excellent file  If they only interview 300 and are deferring almost everyone we know, does that mean that most that are deferred have a good chance there? i am confused still and i will be calling miami on monday. if you talk to them first, get back w/ me so i dont call them and ask the same questions.
you think we will have a good idea if we are in by end of april?
do they tell you yoiur placement on the waitlist. like if you have a good chance, etc?

Blame,
I think that if you get an interview at Miami you have a good chance of getting in there. When I interviewed there in October, Dr. Hinkley said that they interview 300 and accept 240 out of those. Those are extremely good chances. I hope he was not pulling our legs. :D I do not know if Miami lets you know what is your position on the waitlist, but askig doesn't hurt, right? I won't be able to call Monday because I have class. Since you are calling tomorrow, fill me in will you? :) By the way, what undergrad did you attend?

P.S. Have you noticed how we've completely changed the topic of this post?

Yes you have gone off topic. I recommend Blameit change it to:

"Let's discuss our interviews at UMiami and make Foxy cry that she can't watch her 8 year old brother grow up and be close to her family while at medical school since she doesn't have an interview and just read final decisions are being sent out at the end of march which is right now, and she learned spanish to be able to go to med school in miami and wont be able to and is feeling pathetic and whiny right now"

 :(

wow I really am crying, that's pretty sad

Foxy,
Nina calmate. El espanol es beneficial en cualquiera parte. Si no lo vas usar en Miami, lo usaras en el proyecto de tu vida con tus futuros pacientes. Recuerda, es la perdida de Miami en no haberte escogido. :p

Besides, you should still keep the faith. Miami will not be done interviewing until April 19. Last I heard they were really backed up. I have friends with files that were complete back in November and with really good stats that haven't heard anything yet.

Gracias CANES :D Algunas veces me siento triste y enojada con este proceso pero ahora me siento mejor, despues de escribirlo. :)

Congrats and good luck to you....en el futuro

oh I didn't really learn Spanish to go to Miami-I just thought it would be useful as a doctor since I plan to be in Florida in the future (and I love the language :D )

I currently attend FSU undergrad, and I love Fl. However, I didn't apply to FSU Med, b/c of the cost (I am a GA resident). However, if I don't get in anywhere this year, I will apply here as well. BTW, FSU is accreditted for the first two years. The PIMS program allowed students to take thw first two years here and then finish at UF. They are trying to get accredited for the last 2 years. Good luck!

Foxy,
i was waiting for someone to say that the topic had changed. i would have sent a PM to cane, but that was not possible. I am sorrry to hear that you will not be able to be close to your family. Why did you go to undergrad so far away? I am sure they miss you now. lil brothers love beating up on their big sis. Besides, you got Florida in your back pocket(keep your fingers crossed)
Cane, i am from UCF. i am going to go ahead and call down there and get the info we are looking for. I need to know.

Fluffyj, i always understood the pims program to be accredited for the first year only and not the second. please correct me if i am wrong. and if it did not get accreditation would i be able to start in another med school as a second yr student?
This post is still for people attending FSU.
Guess that all SDN members are an elite group of people and are only accepted to IVY league schools or Florida, which is not IVY league and never will be in my book

I don't see what all the commotion on FSU is about. It's going to take time to establish itself and at least they don't make it easy for a school to become accredited. I think the positives; small class size, state tuition, progressive curriculum outweighs the negatives; current (temporary) unaccredited status, lack of reputation. By matriculating at FSU you are helping to define the school and subsequently builiding its reputaion. I thinks its an honor to be accepted into their second class and have the opportunity to excel w/o all the resources more established schools have to offer. If Barry's law school was able to obtain accredidation albeit for a law school then I'd bet FSU will become accredited in a matter of time.

I'm pretty sure it is for the first two years, but I am not absolutely positive. I think that I was talking to a 2nd year student here, but then again they could have been lying. You just never know!! However, a histology class for the PIMS program was in a class next to mine. Is that a 2nd year class?

What's the PIMS program? I thought that the transfer program to UF was abolished last year when FSU became its own med school. I think that's what Dr Hill at UF said.

I do think FSU will be acredited in the future, and as a regular transfer student it will be fine, since the first 2 years are acredited (sp?).

If you plan to practice in a rural area, you will definitely have no problems once they are acredited.

The PIMS program is gone now, but when I first came to school here at FSU, they really pushed for students to apply.

Okay, let me clarify a few things here. First off, I never said anything "bad" about FSU. I was just warning BlameItOnTheNurse that there were some issues going on at the school that ANY PRUDENT APPLICANT should be aware of. Personally, I've lived in north Florida for the past 11 years (Tally & P'Cola) and my father & stepfather BOTH work for the school. In addition, my little brother is a computer science major there. You think I MIGHT have wanted to go medical school there??? Hmmmm...I wonder?? I just choose not to because I wanted to KNOW that I would receive an education that would prepare me for the boards/residency and would have the proper accreditation to assure that all of MY HARD WORK would indeed pay off. Anyone that goes to a school just because they feeled "honored" to be part of the first class is being naive. AMA isn't going to give a rats patooty if you felt honored or not if the school isn't accredited....

Anyway, in answer to some of the other questions...PIMS is GONE. PIMS (program in medical sciences) was a joint program between FSU/UF that let students from North Florida take there first year of basic sciences at FSU and then transfer down to UF for years 2-4. The accreditation for PIMS was ONE year...they never had faculty nor courses pertaining to year two. If they are still riding on PIMS accreditation, you can see how the inaugural class may be getting a little antsy by now...in August they will begin taking second year courses and won't know if they will count or not. I know I sure wouldn't like that feeling!!! (DISCLAIMER: Just like I said the first time...FSU HAS appealed the accreditation decision to AMA...it may have been resolved. That's why I mentioned checking it out for yourselves)

And last but not least...what's with the comment about UF "not being Ivy League"??? Who ever said it was...I sure didn't. And I sure the H#LL don't come from Ivy League upbringing! I'm the first in my family to go to and finish college!

Sorry to get so short, but I really hate seeing these threads turn into p!ssing matches over which school is better. I never said FSU was a bad program...just that it has some issues going on that have serious ramifications if they aren't resolved. You've all put a lot into your education and application to get where you are now...you should EXPECT the school to be able to hold up it's end of the bargain in return!!! Think about it!

cobragirl,
did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed? i did not see anyone attack your reply. Only a peaceful conversation w/ cane and a few others.
We were all getting along fine until your last reply. There was no dick measuring contest going on in this post and there should not be. We are all in the same boat and should be supportive. Any insults by me are all in humor.
Sorry if I stepped on your toes.
Thank you for the warning about FSU and these are some concerns that i am weighing out. thank yoiu for clearing up the pims history and the which years are accredited. I happened to know the info already, but i appreciate all reinforcing in a post. Congrats on being the first to graduate from college. It takes alot of courage and i am sure effort to step out of the mold and do what you did. What school are you from and where do you expect to attend.

By the way for anyone curious, FSU is scheduled to appeal the decision in April.

If you cant take the heat stay out of the kitchen
or as some lyrics have it
Stop your bitchin and get in the kitchen...take your pick... only kidding.
Can I get a whatwhat...and a peace treaty up in the muther?

Damn, I've been hanging out in SDN land too long! Sorry to answer for you, CG.

It's ok Swampy, I knew it too and already told him on AIM.

We love you Cobragirl!

we are your pathetic followers/proteges :p
ok well, I don't want to speak for Swampy, but I am! woo-hoo!

BlameIt,

You call up UM? If so, what up? Acceptances go out last week or what? Lemme know!

o.k. folks i thought we covered this on another post.

miami will be interviewing till April 19...so after that expect for a mad rush of acceptance letters to arrive at those who interviewed at miami.

another thing...if you had an interview at miami, they accept about 80- 85% of those who interview.

then about 65% of the accepted matriculate there.

forget about how i got the info but lets just say that i know someone in the adcomm.

i am not at liberty to say more :D

i hope this doesn't happen to me next year at other schools...cuz that would bite!!!

8deuce, since you know someone in admissions, do you know how full the class is? Are you sure that it's 80-85%? That seems kinda of high, and even though I've heard of a similar stat I find it hard to believe. Do you have it confirmed from a reliable source?

Papa, I called Miami today (sorry Blame couldn't wait :D ) and they told me that acceptances went out last week. She also said that the class is still not full (didn't say how many positions are open though) and that another meeting is scheduled to take place in three weeks.

Blame, did you call and if so, did she tell you anything different?

Cane

sorry i didn't post about this before but he said that the class still has a good amount of slots left. aprox. half the class

remember that out of a class of 141, 25 slots are for the 6-year bs/md students.

that is a little caveat no one mentions.

another little tid bit...if you are female, fl. resident that has interviewed consider yourself in.
unless you had a bad interview. and i have a feeling who the interviewer would be

hope this helped :D

•••quote:•••Originally posted by 8deuce:

Ya can't just say something like that and not elaborate on why UM gives females preference. I've seen the female med students there, I can kinda guess why, but please clarify. PM me if ya want! I won't tell on you! Smurfs honor.

I'm hoping that this is true. So, why doesn't UM accept me already? You don't want to see a pissed female here.

and i have a feeling who the interviewer would be

[/QB]

What do you mean by this? Are there some interviewers that won't let you in? My interview went well I think, but she didn't give me any feedback.
Cane

cane,
the info about acceptances going out last week was correct. i know a girl who was accepted w/ a 27mcat and 3.4. Smart girl though, but i guess maybe it is an advantage to be a girl. sorry it has not worked out to your advantage. it will later. dont worry. i am the one who needs to worry according to deuce- i am a freakin male.
i will probably call tommorrow. did not get home in time to call. i know the results though. i did not get anything in mailbox yet, so i am waiting another 3wks. thanks for that info.
BIOTN

well there is one interviewer who is a female MD that for some reason loves to grill female students from the word go.

on the topic of acceptances...for females.

i was just told that they prefer to admit females and then i got a wink. but remember that it is fl residents...i have not asked about out of staters.

so i will ask my source tomorrow any questions you may have b/c i shadow him on tues.and wed.

so go ahead and ask me and i will post any good info i get.

take care guys! :D

1) How full is the class? Aren't they supposed to offer as many acceptances as they have seats by March 29th?
2) When are all the deferred applicants going to get a decision?
3) What are they doing to address the problems that the curriculum change caused this year?

Answers to any of these would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

good questions Papa and...
Deuce,You da man!
muchos gracias

Bump. Deuce, you hear anything today? Thanks.

I have a question Deuce. Why didn't they interview Doctora Foxy? I'm in FL right now. Tell them to call me up since I can't check my mailbox. :( :p

p.s. I am a female Florida resident and I am ( )! :( :p

hey guys,

i apologize for not being able to reply until now but all hell broke loose today at the hospital.

i was in surgery with the doc i shadow and serious complications occured.

this is the 4th surgery i have attended with him and the 3 prior went like clockwork.

it got crazy and i felt like i was in the show ER.

the patient is stabilized but...wheww!!!!

well, iwas able to ask him the questions that papa smurf requested and this is what he said.

1- he said some acceptances have been sent but they will have a meeting on april 4 to add some more acceptances. then they have a final meeting on april 19 and he said that is like an all day long meeting to set everything in place.( acceptances, wait-list, etc)

2- deferred will find out in late april/ early may...try to let evryone know before may 15.

3- he explained that the curriculum change did not affect students as much as the professors. said that the old professors were pissed off about the change and felt they should not have to change anything. but thankfully the board scores did not suffer much. he then said something about " all those kids up in florida who failed the step 1 "...not sure what he was talking about or even what year this supposedly happened.
if anyone knows about this please let me know

well i hope this helped. :D

doctora foxy...lo siento mi amor pero la razon de luchar en la vida es por el amor a una persona como tu.

take care !

doin the bump! ahhhh sexy sexy!!!!!!! :D

Deuce, you DA MAN!!! Thanks bro, I really appreciate you taking the time to find this stuff out. At least now we know when to expect something from UM. I can chill for another few weeks. Thanks again bro!

•••••UF had 9 people fail STEP 1. At least that's the rumor going around. Apparently, that's one of the contributing factors to them being much more selective this year in terms of who to interview. As if Ivy League Degree = guarantee of passing Step 1.

Deuce,
When I get accepted to UM, which should be anytime now...I am driving down to miami and taking you out for a beer. Thanks for going undercover and getting the facts, and just the facts!
