I was recently informed by the medical school I was accepted that my account was placed on hold. They told me it was because I failed to meet the English pre-requisites. I had AP credit for English and also took an upper-level Shakespeare course (Eng 311) in college. Although the Shakespeare course was in the English department, they did not recognize the Shakespeare class as an English course. The Academics Program Coordinator told me that Shakespeare was considered a literature class, not an English class.

I am confused because my understanding was that most upper-level English classes would satisfy the English requirement. This particular school was also vague on their English requirements in the website. The only thing mentioned about the English pre-reqs on their site was "English: A minimum of 6 semester hours of college English"

Furthermore, the courses I took were verified by my pre-health advisor to satisfy the English requirement.

The medical school I applied to is a Texas med school and part of the TDMSAS application system. The requirement on the TDMSAS application handbook for English classes stated that most English department classes should satisfy the English requirement, including composition, english, literature, poetry, and rhetoric type courses.

I was wondering if anyone knew more about the English requirements for medical school, and whether it was true that certain classes didn't apply towards this requirement. I was also wondering who else I could reach out to in the school (program directions, assistant deans, etc) to help resolve this accreditation issue?

Thanks in advance

Call your premed advisor.

Tell her to call the school and say that that course satisfies your school's English requirement.

If push comes to shove, you still have time to take the course before August.

Sorry for the mess :/

Each school sets their own prereqs and can determine what classes they will accept (and if they accept AP credit).

You may be stuck with taking an englishbl class over the summer.

TMDSAS schools generally do not take literature classes. They want English Composition I and II.

But there are schools, like mine, that only offer humanities and English classes. All our classes are literature based and we send students to Texas all the time. So I definitely think OP's advisor should call the school first

It's a muddy requirement

When I applied, I was told by a TMDSAS officer that my literature classes at a University of Texas school would not be accepted and that I would need to take English Comp. Maybe if you have special circumstances, you can get around it.

Just bang out College Writing over the summer. Its an annoyance, but it's not like it will be difficult given that you are smart enough to pass AP English and get into medical school.

I would fight it with the accepting school. Send them a syllabus and maybe a note from the professor or department head.

If you've been accepted elsewhere maybe email the admissions coordinator and tell them you won't be able to attend unless they accept your english class.

If all that fails, take english this summer. If possible (depending on schools policy) take one that is online/hybrid, since those tend to be cheaper and easier. If none of those are possible, look into taking a "may session" or otherwise compressed english class at your local U.
