Function and Aesthetics in personal statement

Hi guys,

In my personal statement, I plan on briefly mentioning an instance where I had to design an automotive component while considering both form and function. I basically had to make it work, and also was given the ambiguous task of making it look pretty. I'm wondering if you all think it's worth mentioning. I know that part of a dentists job, esp when doing crowns, veneers, dentures, etc, is to have an "eye" for aesthetics while also considering the functions of a tooth.

Anyways, if you google this vehicle and find a picture of the engine compartment, the part is very obvious and easy to see. It's a popular vehicle, so I wouldn't be surprised if one of the adcoms actually had that vehicle, and can see for themselves.

I know it's not that big of a deal, but I figure it's another one of things that would make me stick out, since I doubt many other people will be putting something like that in.

I think it's a great idea to showcase your talent for something that most people can't or won't do.
Most dentists I have worked for like to tinker or just know how to fix things.

it'll depend on your writing style and how well you squeeze it into the area that demonstrates particular skills. Skills that you believe would make you a fine dentist.

I recall someone posting on SDN that they called up a school and asked why they werent either given and interview or an acceptance, I forgot, but they said that he/she wrote something about aesthetics of "LOOKS", I am not positive, but they said that was a possibility to be a red flag. If someone knows what I am talking about, please clarify it, because I dont remember it that well. All I remember is someone mentioning a word related to LOOKS.

i think it was something like, adcoms arent really into aesthetics or something bc they care more about underpriveleged ppl being able to get dental care, and not really intrested in doing expensive private practice procedures like veneers and whitening and what not.........something like that...

Cosmetics and esthetics are a huge part of dentistry. It's perfectly fine to write about it. Doesn't mean you are shallow. It's not only about helping underprivileged people, it's about making everyone feel better. And a lot of that comes from improved esthetics.

i agree with futuredentt. matter of fact im going to get my teeth rewhitened this week!
i dont hate it. make them so spparkly and white they glow in the darkkk
& i wouldnt mind veneers to get me some hollywood lookin teeth.

but if writing about cosmetics is going to cause issues in ur ps, dont write about it!
