So I just ran by this website the other day, and I have fallen in love. This is an amazing resource. So I finally decided to join. I am starting a little early I guess, I am Junior at Appalachian State and plan on going to Dental school in the next 2-3 years. (sorry for the intro, didn't know where else to put it)

But... here is the question. I had my first Organic Chemistry exam the other day. Feel pretty good about it, but I was just wondering. Is there a simple way, or a method that would make memorizing all of the functional groups easier. I know there is no easy way out... I just thought it was worth asking. Thanks!

You post it into the wrong section. Move it to the DAT discussion board. Mod please move this thread. btw you can learn functional groups better by drawing the structures and writing the molecular formulae all out multiple times and understand the differences.

First off welcome to SDN!

The guys in the DAT subsection would probably be more inclined to answer your question but here's my take:

I personally never memorized the functional groups. Doing reactions with them made me remember what I was dealing with and the properties associated with each. But if you're in first semester ochem, you've probably not even done Sn2/Sn1/E2/E1 yet, let alone rxns with esters or aldehydes...so take out some flashcards and go over them for a couple hours (also works for memorizing all the amino acids).

Cool, thanks. That is what I have been doing. And sorry for the wrong thread post. I'm new here. Ha.

check out the DAT discussions part of this forum, it has all the ncessary info towards the DAT. this is section is more for general applications to specific problems type of section, this is not really for DAT material.
