Very good article. I have to agree that it has to be interesting for a non med student to see how heterogenous a medical school class can be in skill. You've got the ones at the top of the bell curve who you could pass for doctors already, and the ones at the bottom who you wouldn't wish as a doctor on your worse enemy.
I'd love to do the standardized patient thing when I'm actually a doctor (just for fun and volunteering) at the local medical school. Before our standardized patient exam, a few M3 and M4 TA's put on a practice session where they played standardized patients. Their feedback was more helpful than the actual standardized patients because they were familiar with the doctor role. However, they were exceptionally tricky with their responses too. They were masters of leaving stuff out unless specifically asked for. (If you asked about hospitalizations, the'd leave off those of a psychiatric nature unless specifically asked for.)
