Hello all,

I graduated from a tech school with an AAS in electron microscopy sciences in 2010 with a miserable gpa of 2.5. The blame is all my own, as I wasn't serious in any way and had no real idea of what I wanted to do with my life. For the last year I have been working as an electron microscopist at a semiconductor research facility. I've shadowed a general dentist recently because of my ever increasing interest in the field. He told me that with my background and the manual dexterity required working with small samples I would be a good candidate for dental school, and he would let me shadow him as much as I would like.
If I were to get good grades in a bachelors program and do well on the DAT do you think adcoms would overlook my not so impressive gpa that I had in tech school?

Thank you!

I personally think anything is possible. If you do great in whatever schooling you do between now and applying, and apply smart, you do have a chance at getting in to dental school. Schools understand people missions in life change. For a lot of students college is just about passing...grades don't matter at all. And it shows in their GPA.. Sounds like what may have happened to you. Nothing is irrereversable. Just be prepared to really kick it in to high gear and always keep that low GPA in your mind to keep yourself motivated. You will basically have to get 4.0's and 22+ on the DAT...which is possible. Also, you will have to retake any classes that you received anything lower than a C in. Volunteer/shadow a ton and get involved. Strong EC's will also help your app. I say go for it dude...and don't look back. Uphill battle for sure though.

The plan is to retake anything that would count towards the university gpa, preferably start all over as a freshman

I am just hoping that this doesn't stop me before I even begin... I was in a different place with a whole different mindset. All that I really need is a chance to start fresh. Perhaps my work experience at an industry leading research laboratory, for a world renowned company will also help?
