If I plan to continue an activity through the end of next year, should I add future hours into my totals on AMCAS? Or will schools understand if I only list what I've done to date?

It makes sense to enter what you already have, since it's so difficult to forecast future hours, but then I read this and it seemed a little bizarre to me.

Honestly I didn't list what I'm currently doing/plan to do during my gap year because most secondaries ask this question anyway.

I included the hours for my job - I am taking two gap years, and I've been working in my stem cell research lab for the past year and I will continue to work full time for the next year. If I was certain about something, I continued it.

No. If you haven't completed the hours, don't list them. You can write a sentence in the description that you plan to continue doing this activity for X hours/week for the next X weeks and that will take care of it. You don't know what will happen in the future.

Seconded.

I'll chime in and say that this application is new bc it asks for a repeat function. You can't start a future start date, but you can list a future end date. The ? Icon also says to list expected hours. Over on the works and activities thread its said to put down the expected hours and clarify how many you've actually completed in the description.

AMCAS says to list expected hours

agree with anathema and slz. i feel a little odd doing this, but i did list the end date as August 2014 and the instructions on the page of the application do say to list expected hours. I'd say that the best practice would be to extrapolate based on your current rate of participation. putting down an activity that you haven't yet started, though, I'd say is off limits.

The application changed this year and AMCAS now instructs you to input the completed and expected hours into the "Total hours" box. I would include them and put a note in the description about the breakdown between completed and expected hours to eliminate confusion

I should totally make up some awesome activities then be like "yeah, those plans fell through because my work required me to do some crazy hours."

I wouldn't be surprised if some people on sdn say "noo. That's so silly to do a future end date and estimate hours. All while they're including it so that they can have a few hundred more hours of volunteering or working in on their app while you look like your life just stops June, 2013." Follow the instructions and don't screw yourself over... or do. If you choose not to report it, those that are, will have somewhat of an advantage. It's on the application and in the instructions for a reason, which means they'll likely read applications in light of the instructions that were provided which are different from previous years. If you're scared to report future hours because life is unpredictable, just be modest and undershoot so that you likely won't deviate by not fulfilling what you list. Just be very, very conservative and cautious.

My two cents.

Sorry, the two of us who said don't do it are both medical students. Clearly the application has changed a bit since we applied (it has been 4 years since I submitted my AMCAS). If it says in the instructions to include future hours, then do it. That hasn't been the case in the past, hence our advice.

+1. Sorry for misinforming. I was going off of the work/activities form that I filled out 2 years ago. An interesting and rather confusing/misleading change, since they suggest to clarify in the description anyway.
