Hey all, I've been reading the board for a bit and I've been seriously considering pursuing a job as an optometrist.

I have a couple questions I wanna ask and would be thankful for any answers. 🙂

Oh, wouldn't mind answers for U.S. optometrists either. 😎

1) Would it be easier to find a job/higher income in a small town instead of a city? I know competition would be tighter in a city as more people prefer a larger setting...I know of a few doctors that work in smaller town to get a better income.

2) I hear that in the long run, optometrist with a private practice gain. What about working in a practice with opthamalogists? Are the differences great?

3) I also know that being an optometrist is partly being a businessman also...how much income of a typical optometrist is due to selling glasses/lenses, etc.? Are the different incomes of high/low optometrists mainly due to how much they can sell?

4) What would you say is the difference between a pharmacist's and optometrist's lifestyle? I know of a pharmacist who owns his own place and has to work weekends and holidays too! (probably his own choice) But as a junior pharmacist working at a chain store, I would think that he doesn't get much decision over his hours. Whose hours are more flexible?

Thanks again. 👍

one of my high school friend's dad owned a glasses store in calgary and he makes most of his money selling glasses. he's an optometrist but the optometry part is just to get customers into his store. you go for an exam with him, and then afterwards you buy glasses from him. he doesn't even charge for the eye exam.
