Hi, I am a pre-med junior who is very interested in anesthesia. I've shadowed anesthesia doctors all summer and am about 90% certain that its going to be my residency of choice.
However, I found the anesthesia board on this website very daunting and depressing. I'm kind of wondering after reading some of these posts whether there will even be an anesthesia residency out there in ten or twenty years with all this talk of socialized medicine and CRNA's and AA's and whatnot. Furthermore, I'm pretty amazed at the infatuation with money that some posters seem to have.
So are CRNA's really capable of doing anesthesia all on their own? I've not seen an CRNA take a pre-op report on his or her own yet this summer, and although the practice I've shadowed consists of 1 MD for every 4 CRNA's in a lucrative situation, I would describe the working relationship I've seen as very positive. The CRNA's and MD's get along and (to my untrained eye) all seem to be happy.
I'm wondering if there will be a need for anesthesiologists at all with what I've read on here about CRNA's. Is this just "chicken little-the sky is falling" talk--- or are things really in jeopardy of becoming MDA-free in the coming years?
Any serious responses to this inquiry would be greatly appreciated.
