Technology Future Palm Operating System Support

OK, I have to admit, I was skeptical of peoples' thoughts of Palm abandoning PalmOS. Much to my error in thinking Apple would never switch to Intel CPU's, I am now reconsidering my thoughts on Palm switching operating systems.

PalmOS has been officially abandoned by its makers (PalmSource, an ACCESS company), or at least further development of it has been abandoned.

It seems ACCESS is working on ALP (ACCESS Linux Platform) instead. This will be backwards compatible with PalmOS.

Palm is releasing a new Treo on September 14th, and I do believe it will be offered only on Windows Mobile and not with PalmOS. Is this a sign of things to come? Has Palm officially abandoned PalmOS, despite the fact that it renewed its PalmOS license to 2008?

I hate to see the PalmOS go. Hopefully ALP will be a great alternative because I absolutely hate Windows Mobile.

The Palm OS is ten years old, and getting a little long in the tooth. It's time to move on. Backwards compatibility is a given; anything less would be corporate suicide. There's nothing to be alarmed about from the end-user standpoint. As for developers, time will tell.

I totally agree. It will be a sad, sad day if Palm doesn't develop a new upgrade. I get more and more tired of Microsoft and Windows Mobile. Heres hoping for an Apple OSX-PDA
